One of the best things about make up is that you can choose which facial features to highlight or draw attention to. For the Jason Wu spring / summer 2013 show, the center of attention was the lips. Bright, bold and beautiful, the lipstick for this beauty look takes kissable to a whole new level.

Diane Kendal of MAC Cosmetics describes this look as one inspired by iconic German-Australian photographer Helmut Newton. This look features the signature strong eyebrows and bold lips that Helmut Newton is known for and – believe it or not – it’s not that difficult to do. Check out the steps for this spring 2013 beauty look right after the break.

How to: Jason Wu’s bold cherry lipped beauty look

With any make up look, it’s always best to have a good prepping routine. Wash your face and apply some make up primer or a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. This will also help the make up stay on longer.

For the Jason Wu Show, Diane Kendal kept the face looking natural by leaving it as is, with no foundation or tinted moisturizers. You can do this too if you have clear skin but if you want a more flawless look, you can apply a layer of foundation. Just make sure it’s the same shade as your skin tone to keep that whole look natural. You can also use some concealer for problem areas like under your eyes.

Contouring is a big part of this look and to do this, you will need some contouring powder like MAC’s Taupe Shape Powder Blush. A light bronzer can also work but if you can get a matte powder that’ll be better for this look.

Start by applying the contouring powder under your cheekbones with a blush brush. Carefully blend it in and always keep it mind that contouring is like adding shadows. There’s no need to overdo it.

Next, add contour to the crease of your eyes. Take a blending brush and use the same powder you used for under your cheekbones. Carefully blend the powder over your crease to add dimensions to your eyes.

Take a powder blush on and apply it over your cheekbones (above the contour you made). Then blend it with the contoured area by doing soft circular strokes with your blush brush. For the Jason Wu show MAC Poised Powder Blush was used.

Now it’s time to add some highlights to your cheeks. Take something like MAC’s Poised Powder Blush and apply it above your cheekbones (above the blush). Again, softly blend it with your blush using the same technique you did earlier.

The eyes of this look are very easy to do and you will only need one eye shadow which is in gold. Simply dust the gold eye shadow on your lids all the way to your brows. MAC’s Golden Lemon Pigment was used for the Jason Wu show.

Next, thinly line your upper lash line with a black cream eyeliner like M·A·C PRO Black Creme Liner or a liquid eyeliner. This will elongate and add definition to your eyes.
Finish your eyes off by applying a good amount of mascara on your upper lashes. This works well with the eyeliner and again, adds definition.

This look has really strong looking brows and to do this, take MAC’s Dirty Blonde and Deep Dark Brunette Brow Fluidline or an eyebrow pencil and fill in your brows. Make them look square by simply drawing across and not adding more arch to them.

Now for the highlight of this look. To recreate this bold cherry lip, start off by applying a cherry red lipstick. This creates that cherry base that makes the lips stand out.

Next, define your lips with a lip liner, drawing on the outside area. On the inside or the middle area of you lips, apply a pink lipstick and top it with a lip tint.
The final step is to set your lips with a neon powder like MAC’s Neo-Orange Pigment.

If you’re the type of person who wants to stand out without looking over the top then this look will be great for you. The striking brows and bold lips with the simple eyes and cheeks create a balanced beauty look that’s not overwhelming. Whether you wear it day or night, you can be sure that your bold lips will do the talking for you.
