Into the swirling mix of fashion trends for fall 2013 comes the likes of punk, grunge, and gothic. It’s no wonder that the season’s beauty trends branch off into darkness with some looks embracing heavy eyes or – as was the case with Vivienne Tam’s fall runway – deep, dark, lips.
Makeup artist Maud Laceppe created a look for Vivienne Tam that featured a strong lip in a dark purple, near black tone. Matched with graphic yet understated eyes, it’s a look you can adapt or play with on days you feel like edging back towards the ’90s.

How to: Vivienne Tam’s dark purple lip
Prep the skin with moisturiser to keep it fresh and hydrated.
The eyeliner for this look is a straight line coming out of the corner of the eye. Using a gel liner, draw a line from mid way along the top lid down to the corner, the extending out past it. Do the same on the bottom lid, meeting the bottom line with the top line to create one single line at the corner of the eye.
The lips are the key to this look. First, define with the lips with a deep purple lip liner (MAC ‘Current’ was used at Vivienne Tam). Blend the liner into the entire lip. Add dimension and depth to the lip by adding a second liner colour – in this case a deep red-brown (MAC’s ‘Nightmoth’).
Finish the beauty look by highlighting areas of the face in a metallic shine powder. MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish was used at Vivienne Tam across the whole face to give the skin a shimmery finish.
