The metallic lids are nothing new when it comes to the the fall runways, but this season they either push the limits of subtlety, or go opposite direction, exploding in the boldest of jewel tones. Whether you plan on sporting a thin coat of shimmer, or layering on precious metallics, you’re definitely in for a statement. For eyes that literally sparkle go with:

Soft vs. dark shimmers.

Perhaps it is not meant to catch all eyes on the catwalk, nor make for the most lasting impression after, but a pair of subtle shimmery eyes in a soft, feminine hue can make for a beautiful day look during the cold, cold days. Luxurious but in a delicate manner, do opt for this look if you want to dip your toes in the metallic beauty trend without going fully in. Keep in mind that it looks best in gold, silver, copper and rose tones, accented with just a layer of mascara and a pair of hydrated lips.

Fitted for the glamorous nights and embodying the wild side of this season’s take on metallics, a pair of dark, shimmery eyes will have you stealing the show, regardless of scenario. Fall’s muse doesn’t shy away from colour, building upon it into an intense look that puts the spotlight on the eyes. Use dark metallic greys and black for the classic interpretation of smoky, or borrow inspiration from the runway in mixing and matching midnight blues, plums and rich pinks.

Gilded metallics vs. vibrant shimmers.

A classic is a classic and sometimes it doesn’t even need much else in order to make its point. That’s the case of the gilded eyelids that prevailed on the fall / winter runways, kept sleek, simple, and totally effective. If you want a look that is both timeless and chic, you won’t go wrong with gold, silver or bronze metallics, paired to nude lips and flushing cheeks.

Perhaps a turquoise blue with a shimmery finish is not the first choice of eye shadow you would think of for fall but you can trust it to look double as striking during the cold season. Blue, green, purple, there’s no shortage of colour when it comes to infusing your autumnal looks with some vibrancy. And you don’t even need much, a pop of metallic hue on the inner corners of the eyes sufficing in carrying forth the bold statement.

Sultry vs. intense metallic smoky eyes.

If you aim for the less colourful but equally striking of metallic eye shadow make-up looks, nothing like a sleek smoky eye to intensify your beauty this fall.

Opt for a sultry smoky look by covering your lids in a single coat of a dark, shimmery shadow, and use a kohl pencil plus a black mascara to add depth to your eyes.

Go with emerald green, dark purple and navy if you want to build a showstopping metallic look instead, lining underneath the eyes and going all the way up, underneath the brow bone for extra dimension. Keep the rest of the look as simple as possible with a nude or a rosy lip.

The trend in the past.

Like with every other bold make-up trend, there’s a high risk for things to take a wrong turn at any given point. In order to keep the level of sophistication high, this season suggests picking one way to highlight the eyes, whether we’re talking shadow or eyeliner, but not both. If doing both is a must for you, you can always opt for a more natural definition by using a thin eyeliner in a brown shade.

It’s only natural to think of bronze, silver and gold whenever metallic comes to mind, but don’t limit yourself at these three options when there are so many other gorgeous shades to try out. To make sure you’ll stand out this fall, choose a color palette made out of rich jewel tones, including intense plum, sexy emerald and vivid turquoise. If balancing your beauty look is what worries you, keep the focus on the eyes by pairing the metallic shadows with a neutral lip. To turn your beauty look into a bold statement instead, work the fearless red lips in the combination, but choose a subtle enough metallic shade for the eyes.

Gloss and matte finishes

For as much as some of us will fall head over heels for the new metallic eye shadow trend, there will always be someone out there for whom the metallic accent will simply not work. As it’s not always appropriate and it’s not the easiest trend to pull off, the metallic formulas can easily be replaced by the matte and glossy finishes this fall.

The glossy copper can lead to an equally dazzling result, working as a powerful mix between edginess and glamour. By using a gel shadow on the top lids and a hint of mascara on the lashes, you will create a delicate look that will flawlessly reflect the spirit of fall, while keeping your aspect natural.
