How to create a retro-glam beauty look

Leave it to a brand with a quirky name and a cult following to have a very striking beauty look on the runway. Australian brand We Are Handsome recently launched their latest spring / summer collection on the runways of Australian Fashion Week (MBFWA) and aside from the clothes, we couldn’t help but notice the 1970s inspired beauty look. Behind this look was MBFWA official make up sponsor Maybelline NY.

Make Up Director of Maybelline NY, Nigel Stanislaus created a look that came in two versions, purple and jade. Both striking and bold, these colors reflect the inspirations behind this beauty look: Guy Bourdin. Like Bourdin’s famous photography style, this spring 2013 beauty look for We are Handsome is truly unique. Read on after the break for the steps on creating this retro, ultra-glam beauty look for yourself.

How to: We Are Handsome beauty look

FACE

Every great beauty look needs a good base and you get this by priming before anything else. You can use a moisturizer or an all in one primer to keep your skin hydrated and to keep your make up on longer.

Next thing you need to do is to create smooth, flawless and youthful looking skin. To do this, you will need a good foundation that matches your skin tone. Apply it evenly using a foundation brush or with your fingers. If you have areas that need extra attention like dark spots, use a concealer to cover them up.
EYEBROWS

Eyebrows do a lot for our face which is why it is important that before anything else, you keep them well groomed. Once you’ve done this you can take an eyebrow pencil like Maybelline NY MAster Shape Brow Pencil to fill in your brows with short upwards strokes. Then use the brush on the other end of the pencil to even your brows out.

EYES

The We Are Handsome show featured two versions of this look but you pretty much do them the same way. One look features purple eye shadow and the other one jade. Whichever color you choose to work with, you’re going to need three shades of it. For purple you will need: purple, violet and a silvery lilac. For Jade you will need: Emerald, Jade and Silvery Moss.

Start by taking the lightest shade. Using a blending brush, apply it all over your lid until you reach your brow bone.

Next, take the second shade and apply it to half of your lids with the blending brush. Blend it with the silvery shade that you first applied.

Take the darkest shade and apply it to the lower part of your lid. Then just like you did earlier, blend it with the other shades. This will create a gradient / smokey eyed look. Apply this same shade to your lower lash line, getting thicker as you go from the inner corners to the outer part. Connect this with the eye shadow on your upper lids so that it wraps your eyes.
Give your eyes that 70s pop by applying mascara on your upper and lower lashes. You can use Maybelline NY Volum’ Express Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara to get really lush lashes.

CHEEKS

Another striking part of this beauty look is the cheeks. Take an intense shade of blush and apply it from your cheeks to your temples (think Joan Collins).

LIPS

Finish this look by putting on a flaming red lipstick and then topping it off with lip gloss for extra shine.

1970s retro makes for an on-trend look this season. Striking, bold and fun, you can wear it with the simplest outfit and still look all glammed-up.
