When it reaches for the depths, fashion is about communicating wordlessly. It can send an image flashing into your mind’s eye or an emotion creeping through your veins, all at the glimpse of a silhouette or the blur of a colour. Part of that is shaped by our own biases, our experiences and projections. Partly, it’s shaped by the designer.
Much of what label 1.dark level is communicating through their spring 2013 collection comes down to colour. Somewhere, at the back of my mind, the blues in the collection are interiors of classical architecture, vibrant crackled paint and mosaic tiles. It’s no coincidence: the blue is described by the label as “sacred” – “the sky-blue of Renaissance frescoes on vaulted ceilings.” The carnal red was inspired by Medieval paintings and elaborate jewellery, the yellows of the collection by the richness of oil paints.
But, like all good and desirable fashion, 1.dark level’s colour palette is interpreted in a very modern and on-trend way. Your sacred blue and yolk yellow might be, say, winding their way across a smartly cut peplumed bustier dress, or striping their way down silk pyjama-cut pants. The collection is also rife with prints, the kind that spring 2013 so adores, prints that span head-to-toe slim cut suits and convey a more literal approach to telling a story. There’s a brocade print with bunches of flowers, and – a favourite for any literary fiend – a library print of ancient books.
Up close there are other modern touches: sporty mesh inserts and neoprene trim, printed silk linings and soft silk crepe de chine panels. These, and other, details certainly warrant viewing the pieces in person to appreciate them fully.
