More often than not, knowing the story behind a collection makes you appreciate it all the more. With Assad Mounser that is the case, though it’s hardly a requirement; this is jewellery that makes such a statement, it stands up in it’s own right, story or no story. There’s a feeling of something exciting, some long-lost treasure found.
And if we do delve into the story that sense of buried treasures gets drawn into a wider picture. Titled Neo Conquistador the collection is all about the destruction of an empire and the creation of a new world from the rubble, a phoenix-like rising from the ashes. On knowing this the exploding fragments of gems and shooting rods of metal that compose the hulking pieces have more meaning.
As the story continues, the conquistador searches for relics from the cultures destroyed, finding primitive carved wooden and glass tribal beads, claw drops, and sharp silver cones significant of spearheads. Finally, all the relics are combined into new and modern pieces laced in vibrant neon colors meant to represent a new day of promise and awakening.
