The first glimpse of the forthcoming Tom Ford women’s range was tantalizing. Not for the designs, mind you, but because Tom Ford, being Tom Ford, had bucked against the done thing. There was a preview of his forthcoming collection, yes, but a catwalk, no. Guests were abundant, media coverage was not. Such is the mystique of Ford: exclusivity down to the last detail. But more than that, Ford celebrated a showing of the collection and addresses a bugbear that I too share with the fashion industry: the public showing of clothes months before they’re available borders on insanity. Today, however, the wait is over: we can take the wraps off of a small part of the first womenswear collection the designer will craft under his own moniker.
Infused with more elegance than the sexuality he’s largely known for, Ford describes his collection as more akin to his work at Yves saint Laurent than Gucci, “there’s a continuity from what I was doing at YSL at the end; that’s the customer.”

After that, it’s not likely to be until the Oscars are held that you’ll see the pieces again, Ford revealing that he’ll “wait to see who’s nominated for the Oscars. Then I will offer to dress one person.”
