To give Una Burke’s leather pieces labels like belt or necklace or even harness seems to simplify them in a way that doesn’t quite do them justice. Burke describes them as ‘wearable art’ – a more deserving title given the intricacies of structure and detail.
A wunderkammer of scientific influences has in the past seen Burke’s accessories based off parts of the human body, prosthetic limbs and braces. But fall 2012 seems a little more to the armorial side. Leather pieces are hinged with studs, panelled, or made decorative with flowering loops of leather. If these pieces are Burke gone pretty, they succeed – but with an appropriate level of artistry, curiosity and fierceness.
