If you have a spare ¬£400,000 and have a fascination with French History you may just be in luck with auction house Christie’s getting ready to auction pearls that once belonged to Marie Antoinette. That’s right the same Marie that according to wikipedia was miss-credited with the quip “Let them eat cake”.

The pearls have quite a history being smuggled across the Channel by Lady Elizabeth a close friend of Marie Antoinette who promised to return them after her friend was released from her imprisonment. Of course history made this impossible and fifty years after their trip the Pearls were mounted on a necklace for the wedding of Lady Elizabeth’s grandson and have remained in the family for over 200 years.
