Raoul have become known to me as a label whose collections are effortless yet utterly polished. In sitting here trying to think of a word that encapsulates that quality I’ve become quite convinced that there isn’t such a word; the best I can explain it is as a sort of phenomenon where no piece is in itself outstandingly remarkable, and yet when you look at the collection as a whole you somehow want to own every bit of it. It’s like an album by The Strokes, devoid of any fanfare, sweeping strings, or wildly new ideas, and yet completely enjoyable and somehow extraordinary despite being so, well, ordinary. Ok so it’s not the best analogy, but you can rest assured I mean that as every compliment (to Raoul and to The Strokes).
The clean lines and perfectly on-trend palette of neutrals, pastels, and earthy colours puts Raoul’s spring 2011 collection in the right zeitgeist. Each piece seems to fit with each other piece, each look crosses the day-night / office-social boundaries. Add to that shapes like beautifully minimalistic maxidresses and elegant wide-leg pants, and a look book starring model-of-the-moment Arizona Muse. And – even without the sweeping strings – it’s a collection that’s somehow extraordinary.
