Worthy Of Your Wardrobe.

Burberry Women’s Cocoon Coat.

Come winter, there’s nothing a wardrobe needs more than the right coat. Such a coat isn’t just versatile, it’s a romantic representation of the season. When the sun is nowhere to be seen, and the rain is applauding gently against the surface of your umbrella, there’s nothing more satisfying than being warm and protected inside a well-made winter coat.

To find a coat that both defends against the chill, envelops you with comfort, and also turns heads with its unfathomable chicness, seems like something of a feat. Fortunately, as we’ve proved with the men’s duffle coat, Burberry is more than catering to those who want to live the next two seasons kitted out with an English Mod vibe. While that translates to the duffle coat for men, the women’s Burberry statement piece that caught our eye for the season is the Burberry Prorsum sculptural coat.

The aesthetic.

Everything has a real sculptural element to it – we looked at old David Bailey images of Jean Shrimpton, and also at sculptors Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore for inspiration.

Burberry Chief Creative Officer

The cocooned silhouette of the coat finds its roots in the ’60s. Fitting given that autumn / fall 2011 is a season in which 1960s fashion has again made its mark on the fashion world and we are again looking to icons such as Jean Shrimpton for inspiration on how to dress for the season. If it’s too cold to be traipsing about the city in a straight-cut mini shift dress, then a statement coat that drips with swinging ’60s appeal is the best option by far.

In a bold hue like the vibrant tangerine that Burberry have on offer, the mod feel of the coat is magnified tenfold. But it’s also dished out with enough of a modern twist that the cut and colour will stand the test of time.

The finer details.

The coat is made of compact wool, resonated on the reverse for a robust, rounded, sculptural feel. The fabric is heavy weight, for added warmth and protection against the elements. The fit of the coat is a mix of vintage and modern: tailored sharply, yet with the cocoon shape through the middle. There’s a tailored fit through the shoulder and arm, and a long knife pleat a that back which allows for greater freedom of movement. If the little details are important to you (and we’d suggest they should be, given that a curated wardrobe is all about the details) you should also pay heed to the stitching: it’s done with extra thick thread inspired by the stitching traditionally found on vintage luggage.

A key detail in both the women’s and men’s Burberry Prorsum collections of the season, this particular coat features a curved sleeve with dropped epaulettes which relax the mood of the piece. Overall the ’60s-inspired silhouette coupled with the high quality fabrication is a marriage of elegance and function. And that’s the beauty of that perfect winter coat: when you can head outside in both warmth and style, those rainy days never looked so inviting.

The investment.

The Burberry Prorsum virgin wool sculptural coat is available from Net A Porter, Burberry stores, and other select stores globally.

Late one Oxford night Daniel P Dykes set about creating a fashion publication that would go someway to being an arbiter on fashion as it appeals to the emerging power generations: those who don't remember a world without the Internet and for whom work plays second fiddle to pleasure. And so Fashionising.com was born as a publication for those who were focussed not just on fashion's trends, but on society's too, and how those trends could all go to heighten the art of living. Hence, Daniel sees a future where, for those young at heart, both fashion and style are grounded in traditional quality, but with a youthful, sensualised edge. Daniel is Fashionising.com's Editor in Chief and Chairman.
