Persol have always held an appeal for me. And how could they not? Their classic lines and quality crafting, true to their ‘hand made in Italy’ labelling, easily distinguish them from so many other pairs of sunglasses available to the savvy shopper. When driving, it’s often a pair of Persol 2902s, in mock tortoiseshell, that I don. For this summer, however, I’ve been on the hunt for a new pair. Not that the 2902s have reached their use-by; I just need something that folds down smaller. And the genius of Persol’s folding frame provides just that. Luckily for me, they’ve also just released a special edition of one of their most iconic pairs and Steve McQueen staple: the Persol 714.
Released as the Persol 714 SM, the special edition sunglasses feature several distinctions over the classic pair: the folding closure, offering the compactness seen in the above picture, has been improved upon; Perol’s Supreme Arrow signature motif features across the temple hinges as well as the folding hinges; and they’re again available with the blue lenses reputed to have preferred by Steve McQueen.
The Persol 714 SMs are available at Sunglass Hut in the United States and retail for $360. For our readers in Italy and France, you’ll have to wait till 20 October for them to become available. All of which leaves me wondering where I’ll get my pair, given I’m spending the coming months elsewhere.
