Whenever I think about the beach, my mind immediately goes to the scene in The Talented Mr. Ripley where Matt Damon first crosses paths with Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow on the sandy beach of Mongibello. While it’s a short scene, it sets in momentum the deceptions to follow and it perfectly encapsulates the Italian coastal setting that is so integral to the character of the film. There’s no doubt that the characters exude a sophisticated ease to them, and it’s one that’s pretty easy to emulate. I gathered some items that might help you celebrate the sun in ease and style, minus Mr. Ripley’s fluro trunks.

Short sleeve end on end shirt from Reiss, Oxford court short-length juoy-print swim shorts from Robinson les Bain.

You’ll never catch Dickie Greenleaf in shorts that fall below the knee. These trim pair of shorts of Robinson les Bain are at a perfectly flattering length without being too revealing. You’ll appreciate the well thought out construction details while others will admire the nonchalant print.

When it’s time grab a drink at the bar, consider this linen popover shirt from Reiss. Everything, from the short sleeves, the grandad collar and the relaxed shape emanates the casual lifestyle from living on the Italian coastline.

Sunglasses: For an American playboy living in Italy, only Italian made sunglasses will do. The clear frames offer a playful and rebellious spin on the usual classic wayfarer style. From Spekre.

Espadrilles: They’re a hell of a lot stylist than flip-flops and you can wear them out to the local jazz club; what’s not to love about the espadrille? From Soludos.

Towel: Upgrade from your mother’s beach towel to one that’s made from linen. Compared to your traditional terry cotton towel, they’re lighter, more water absorbent and quicker to dry. Plus, there’s a rustic charm to the fabric that we love. From Deck Towel.

Straw Hat: A straw trilby adds some form of distinction to even the most casual of outfits and I can’t imagine Mr. Ripley going to Italy without one. From Hartford.

Canvas Tote: An oversized tote has the wondrous ability to carry everything you need for the beach and have room for the fresh bread and wine you’re going to buy from the market on the way back. From Engineered Garments.
