Tom Ford menswear: breaking the black tie mould

It’s hard to imagine the Tom Ford male looking anything less than razor sharp. If his hair is a little tousled or he has a 5 o’clock shadow it’s because he wanted it that way. So for this spring 2013 menswear look book Ford bring us that deliberately engineered creation all the way: even in boldly printed pink and purple swimming trunks, the Tom Ford man has style.

Taking him from the helm of a yacht to the helm of a boardroom is Ford’s range of men’s suiting. Colour this season is statement-making without being too over the top, and many of Ford’s jackets are strong and slender with peaked lapels. Suits like these can be a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy: the confidence needed to pull one off becomes real once the suit goes on. If you feel confident and successful, in other words, you might just become it.

Tom Ford’s spring 2013 suiting also dabbles in bringing tuxedo-style jackets out of the black tie arena. Jackets in vibrant hues are rounded out with shawl lapels, paired with bow-ties or fringed tuxedo scarves, and set atop contrasting coloured trousers. Who said a tuxedo jacket had to be black?
