As fall 2013’s fashion trends draw nearer, it’s high time for the northern hemisphere to look ahead and consider whether any summer purchases will continue to serve as the weather transitions to cool days and cooler nights. With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of 5 items you can be excited about wearing now – and in three months time.

See them after the break.

pieces to wear in summer and keep for fall

The little lace dress.

The lace dress as a day-to-night staple isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so don’t be afraid to invest now and keep wearing as the temperature drops. Swap open-toed heels for tights and ankle boots, add a coat, and the little lace dress works across the seasons.

The chic white pant.

Turn a summer staple into the basis of a winter white outfit with a pair of chic tailored or wide-leg white pants. As the mercury drops, pair them with boots, a matching white blazer or white coat trimmed in fluffy faux fur.

The cropped moto jacket.

Heatwaves not withstanding, there are plenty of evenings in summer where a cool breeze warrants a chic jacket, and for that your most versatile option is either a great tailored blazer or a second-skin leather biker. A cropped moto jacket in a nude leather is visually lighter and more suitable for the warmer months – and yet it’ll carry you straight through to fall, able to be worn with everything from a floaty dress to a pair of jeans.

The sheer plaid shirt.

A plaid shirt in semi-cheer chiffon is the ideal marriage of neo grunge and laid back glamour. The lightweight fabric makes it great for summer nights in denim shorts or – for a complete contrast – elegant evening skirts. For fall, make it all about layering: under knits, over dresses, or nonchalantly tied around the waist.

The circle skirt.

Full skirts have had a reinvention the past few years, going from a strictly feminine and vintage-inspired item to a piece with which anything goes. For fall, trade short sleeves for a relaxed slouchy knit or even a sporty varsity jacket, bringing this mid-century classic into the effortless territory of the modern day.
