The menswear spring 2012 catwalks have barely had a chance to cool, the collections they hosted have yet to make their full impact, and there are another two seasons to live through before we even indulge in next year's spring / summer pieces. Yet none of these points get in the way of the fact that with many an interpretation of menswear for spring / summer 2012 revealed, there comes a desire to begin promoting them.
And that's just what Italy's MFF (Magazine For Fashion) is doing. For their sixty-third issue, MFF have grouped models, designers and their collections for a crystal clear take on what the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Missoni, and John Varvatos are offering for the season.

There's no doubt about it: street style photographs are popular; it's the fashion industry's version of reality TV, only good. And while the likes of Bill Cunningham first pioneered street fashion photography decades ago, with many a photographer subsequently aping it, it's a style of photography that not only remains popular but also influential. Sadly, however, as an art form it's long moved from beyond a well curated scarcity to become a mass produced commonality. Some fashion magazines are known to stage their own take on the subject, dressing every day people in clothes from their advertisers. And then there's the fact that the style has now unabashedly reached advertising campaigns.
Thus it's fair to question whether or not the popularity of street style photography is coming to an end. After all, most trends (for street style photography is certainly 'trendy') soon begin to attract a look of disdain once they reach mass popularity and the mainstream. Is street style destined for the same? Is it dying?

Despite the winter rains soaking the city, the first of the coming season's blossom is unfurling in Melbourne. Timely then that the spring / summer 2011 interpretation of Melbourne spring fashion week was launched today. MSFW, as it's also dubbed, is of course a consumer fashion week; that is its aim is not to debut future fashions but to get us, as consumers, to buy the new season clothes and accessories that are appearing in stores.
MSFW 2011 is in for its biggest challenge yet. After all, Melbourne is a city in which fashion retailers are in a downward spiral, their sales outlook bleak. Thus the fashion week's sole purpose this season has to be to work to reverse that trend; it has to get those who attend its events shopping again.
So what's new for MSFW this year? And how might it excite us, as fashion consumers, and help those who sell fashions it's hoped we'll covet?

The onslaught against Australia's fast-fashion, middle-market retailers continues refuses to abate. International fast fashion brand Zara has opened in both Sydney and Melbourne this year, and Fashionising.com was the first to reveal the coming of Topshop to Australia. Now comes the confirmation that Zara will open their first store in Adelaide this year.

The evolution of men's fashion is so slow that even when we peg a trend as relevant to a season as far out as spring 2012 it's inevitable that you'll begin to see it worn in the present. So it is that the men's relaxed tailoring trend hits the streets well ahead of next year's spring and the coming fall 2011 fashion season that will begin to shape it.
