If you could mix up a formula for cool that involved two parts dashingly handsome and one part danger, then the end result would undoubtedly be Steve McQueen. McQueen is legendary not just for a stellar film career but as an avid car and motorcycle racer, adventurer, stuntman and style icon. It was in celebration of the latter that we gathered yesterday, on the first day of 2011’s Pitti Uomo, at the WP store in Florence, where quintessentially British brand Barbour presented their Barbour x Steve McQueen collection.
History has it that Steve McQueen‘s love of Barbour‘s hard-wearing International jacket goes back to 1964, and so it is that the legendary pairing became the inspiration for Barbour’s 75th anniversary collection. The McQueen tribute jackets on display at last night’s launch could come from the wardrobe of the man himself; distressed with the casual rebellion of someone who makes smudges of motor grease and a cooly dangling cigarette look both dangerous and sexy. Put one of these jackets on, Barbour seem to dare, and you’ll inherit those qualities.
With motorcycle fashion back on-trend for both genders in 2011, Barbour’s capsule couldn’t come at a better time. And from last night’s launch one thing was particularly clear; in 75 years of the biker jacket, Barbour is still king.
