It's early on a Sunday morning when I arrive, a little late, at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The Fashion Exposed fair is set up and ready to go with dozens of stalls exhibiting clothes, shoes, bags... you name it, it's there. It's the first time Fashionising.com have been invited to judge the Debut competition, which gives emerging designers a kick-start into the industry, and we're thrilled to be involved. I'm handed a clipboard and pen before being introduced to the other fashion-savvy judges: Kate Vandermeer, Sprinkle, Leah from Milly Sleeping, and the ever-lovely Evita from FASHIONTREND Magazine. We roam the floor looking for the best and brightest in each category, diligently marking each designer on a range of criteria before sitting down for conversation, coffee, and eventual consensus.

Running alongside 2009's Fashion Exposed buying fair is the Australian Shoe Fair. Pretty much a dream for any girl (or shoe-loving guy, for that matter); and definitely a must for any footwear industry professional, the 2009 shoe fair will bring dozens of exhibitors together under one roof.
One label to have a presence at this year's fair is Lipstick, by Windsor Smith. Playing upon Spring/Summer 2009 shoe trends, faux reptile-leathers, lace, and fetish-inspired zips and straps all feature.

On Tuesday, 1st of September Fashion Exposed will bring an unmissable line-up of speakers to its industry seminar series. Kicking off with a panel of industry experts from Fashion Group International - discussing ready-to-wear seasonal trends - the stage will then play host to Jack Hanrahan from Westfield Retail Relations, who'll analyse the retail strategies of iconic stores such as Topshop, Prada, and Selfridges&Co. Finally, more upcoming trend analysis from Mudpie UK. On top of the great program of speakers, the seminars are pure value for money: each 1 hour seminar costs just $33 to attend.

Mixing vintage with modern, the debut collection from Marion Liese - titled A Dark Romance - is all at once luxurious yet minimal. Based around stretch silk and cotton mesh, these are pieces that could quite easily transform from underwear to outerwear. Marion Liese is one of the finalists in the Debut program of Melbourne 2009's Fashion Exposed fair.

Last week we introduced Kuwaii, one of the finalists of Debut at Fashion Exposed. Another finalist - this time in the accessories area - is Dames & Divas, whose colourful range of limited edition shoes, bags and accessories are entirely handmade utilising vintage silk kimonos.

It wasn't all that long ago that we were admiring the burgeoning labels that made it to the finals of Fashion Exposed's Debut contest in Sydney this year. Now, with the Melbourne fair just around the corner, twelve more budding design talents are about to be unearthed.
Victorian-based label Kuwaii is one of the Melbourne 2009 finalists; her intelligent yet minimal, striking yet simple garments comprising a coherent collection that shows much promise.

We'd already showed you some of the upcoming designer talents who were finalists of the Debut program at Fashion Exposed; now you can see plenty more by watching the video coverage of the Debut parade. The apparel category of Debut was won by Eternal Safari and Sebastian's Sister, while Lost Not Lonely took out the top prize for the accessories category.

Labels Eternal Safari and Sebastian's Sister began collaborating in 2008, and thus far have proved a successful partnership. Together, they conceive cleverly thought-out garments that twist and turn and transform from one thing into another and back again. Their debut collection 'It was a restless moment' may stick to a palette of classic black, but the construction of the pieces is more than adventurous enough to make this collection worth a look.
At the Sydney 2009 Fashion Exposed fair, this collection was awarded the winner of the apparel category in the Debut initiative, the judges calling it "elegant, bohemian, distressed yet beautiful and intelligent".

Didn't I mention that Debut @ Fashion Exposed would unearth some fantastic new design talent? Well, here's a peek at another finalist in the Debut program, Tilley Row. The collection, titled 'Moon Goddess', features an array of amazing fabrics from fine silk georgette to metallic cotton, parachute silk and lycra.

One of the most exciting and positive things about the Fashion Exposed fair is a program called 'Debut'. All about unearthing and nurturing upcoming designer talent, Debut has helped many young designers break into the competitive playing field that is the fashion industry. At the Sydney fair this year (which runs from March 8-10, 2009) there are 12 finalists for Debut, falling under the two categories of Apparel and Accessories.
One of the finalists in the Accessories category is emerging label Lost Not Lonely (pictured above). Detailed and unique, this collection was inspired by dust, diesel and dirty trucks; a homage to the designer's upbringing around a family-run trucking business in small town New Zealand.

A contingent of leading Hong Kong based designers will be coming to Sydney this March for Fashion Exposed. Among the designers is Harrison Wong, whose collections regularly hit the runways at the New York and Milan Fashion Weeks.
Harrison Wong's Spring/Summer 2009 collection, which is a flirtatious foray into bright colours and sporty cuts, will make its Australian debut at Fashion Exposed.

There's so much on the program for 2009's Fashion Exposed in Sydney, that I'm not even sure where to begin. From Debut - the biannual awards which unearth amazing new designer talents - to StreetLab - a space dedicated to the hottest and edgiest young labels, there's plenty to see. We'll go into more detail on the individual events later, but in the meantime, do register to visit. Whether you're a designer, a buyer, or just someone interested in fashion - it's definitely worth checking out and registrations are free.

Fashion Exposed runs from March 8 - 10, 2009. Stay tuned for more details, and for coverage of the events.
