Kicking off the major international fashion weeks, New York Fashion Week is the first of the big four to take place. NYFW opens its doors to the fashion industry twice a year for the Autumn (Fall)/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. Below you'll find coverage of New York Fashion Week 2009 and 2008.
It seems that every time Olivia Wilde has popped up on Fashionising.com it's been for some utterly sexy flesh-baring endeavour, like her recent bikini shoot for GQ. Proving that elegance is just as much her forte, Wilde stole the show at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, where she wore a sheer panelled Marchesa gown.

Part bed-hair, part beach-hair, the models at Proenza Schouler's Spring/Summer 2010 runway show had the sort of tousled and sexy locks every girl wishes she could just wake up with.
Didier Malige, lead stylist for Frederic Fekkai, shares how he created the New York Fashion Week look:

There's something about the tough and gritty sports that's appealing to designers this season. Definitely headed for 2010 trend status, feminine interpretations of sportswear were high on Alexander Wang's agenda, as well as appearing in the Spring/Summer 2010 collection of Alexandre Herchcovitch. Herchcovitch's football theme took accentuated shoulders to the extreme; but while the more dramatic costumery makes the collection much less street-ready than Wang's, the elements of sports socks, subtle sheer pieces, and colourful tunics are key winners from Herchcovitch's New York Fashion Week show.

The influences feeding into Oscar de la Renta's Spring/Summer 2010 collection were many and various. Country tweeds and safari jackets found themselves alongside crisp white Broderie Anglaise ensembles, ruffled satin gowns, and even some exotic Egyptian-inspired looks. To top off the eclectic influences, models on the New York Fashion Week runway wore a hair trend that's been going on for some time now: milkmaid braids.

Sheer clothing has been a leading fashion trend for sometime now, and the Spring 2010 catwalks confirm our view that it will indeed be a fashion trend in 2010. Given sheer's popularity coupled with the dominance of nudity in fashion you'd expect that most models would anticipate having to wear very little on next season's catwalks. Not so at Erin Fetherston.

It wasn't all that long ago that Agyness Deyn was known for her peroxide blonde bob, but with 2010 hair trends just around the corner the English model has joined the growing list of those opting for the short black hairstyle.

We've spotted Taylor Momsen in her underwear so it only stands to reason that when Lindsay Lohan took her seat next to Momsen at G Star's Spring 2010 catwalk during New York Fashion Week, she too was wearing the lingerie as outwear fashion trend by way of exposed stay-ups.

With the larger Spring 2010 catwalks consuming much of our day, it's quite easy to forget about the more intimate affairs of a fashion week that quite often present the work from equally talented, yet less funded, designers. With Agent Provocateur's Spring 2010 catwalk, however, the word intimate may definitely apply but scant clothing is to be found.

There's a very elegant simplicity to Elise Overland's Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Showing on the runway at New York Fashion Week, Overland stuck mostly to block colours in a palette of blacks and nudes. Flowing on from her previous Autumn/Winter 2009/2010 collection, which heavily used leather as its basis, the leather trend reappears in many forms for Spring; from midriff-baring tops, to shorts and dresses.

Victoria Beckham's Spring/Summer 2010 collection is exactly as you'd imagine it: a mixture of geometric cuts, peplums, and largely conservative colours. In fact, it's most striking attribute is precisely how subdued the collection, in its entirety, is; there aren't any show stopping looks to speak of, unlike other Spring 2010 catwalks it was intimately presented and was without something you could formally identify as a runway, and it still feels like a collection that wouldn't be amiss on Roland Mouret's catwalk.

It wasn't so long ago that Alexander Wang injected a high dosage of glamour into grunge, and helped spawn a street trend of high fashion mixed with ripped stockings and boyfriend shirts. Now, with his Spring/Summer 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week, Wang has turned his hand to sportswear; transfusing it with that same understated glam-factor that he does so well.

There's something utterly European about the appeal of Monarchy's Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk for men and women; in itself that's not surprising given their past seasons, but it does provide a marked difference amongst other collections showing at New York Fashion Week.
Grecian and sheer pieces mix with plunging necklines in the women's component of the collection, while the men's component is replete with trim tailoring and piped blazers that wouldn't be amiss in either a Ralph Lauren or Paul Smith collection.

Expect a lot of designers to aim for safety; with all the cuts you'd expect of a Spring/Summer season heavily mixed with 2010 fashion trends.

Cushnie et Ochs see themselves a label for women with a heightened sense of sexuality, and women who want to blur the line between sexy and sophisticated. With the use of some of the most alluring 2010 fashion trends, though not exclusively from the Spring 2010 season, I can confidently proclaim that they have created a collection guaranteed to appeal to the women they had in mind when they put needle to cloth.

Revivals are in.
There's the flapper revival, and the Grecian thing. Heck there's even a quasi-90s penchant for an exposed stomach (have we learnt nothing from 'muffin tops'?). And yes, yes there was that 1980s experimentation. But Marc, oh Marc...
Yes, that's one of the stand out looks from the Marc Jacobs Autumn(Fall)/Winter 2009/2010 catwalk.

Can we be the first to say that as most designers are looking for safety on their Autumn (Fall)/Winter 2009/2010 runways it's more than a little refreshing to see a very forwards-looking collection from Edition by Georges Chakra.

February 2009 is just around the corner and with it comes New York Fashion Week; and seemingly the event's sheer statistics are enough to highlight the current troubles facing the fashion industry in light of the world's economic woes.
Last season IMG Fashion, which organizes Fashion Week, boasted more than 80 designers on its schedule. However, only 52 have been confirmed for February Fashion Week so far.

Preppy is cool. Admittedly it has been for sometime, but the popularity of Gossip Girl has done the look no harm. Seeking to capitalise on it is designer Christian Francis Roth with his Spring-Summer 2009 collection for label Francis.
Or is he?

Sex personified.
That's about the only way to sum up Hervé Léger by Max Azria Spring/Summer 2009; the one truly unforgettable collection of New York Fashion Week thus far.
And not only is it one of the most unforgettable, it's also going to be one of the most influential. 2009 fashion trend setting abounds on this catwalk.
With more sex appeal than even Angelina Jolie can muster, the Azria's have guaranteed the one-shoulder trend a place in 2009.
But they haven't stopped there.
