Not colour but contrast

It’s hard to tell whether this skirt and vest combination comprises a bespeckled, abstract pattern or a form of lace; but what is certain is that it plays into the hands of the black and white prints trend without opting for anything too graphic or optical. Instead, it’s all about the contrasts between the skirt suit, the black layers underneath, and the stark white clutch.

The bright and fluffy clutch

An interesting mix like this one is sure to make you look twice. The volume in the skirt, flared like a doll’s. The over-knee socks, school girlish and yet feminine in colour. And a furry, fluffy, orange clutch. Unusual as it may be, almost looking like you might put a leash on it and take it for a walk, there’s no denying it adds quirk…

Long and printed in Paris

Florals are such an emblem of the spring that we often don’t think of wearing them in winter. But not all flowers are for the warm weather only: a floral maxi dress in dark hues made for a suitable cold-weather look during Paris fashion week, matched with a leather biker jacket and black bag.

Perminova: in the detail

With hands and head swathed in bright white fluffy fur, Elena Perminova was one of the most fawned over, focused on and photographed attendees of Chanel’s spring couture show. We featured the outfit in full, boots and all, here. Because you can never have too much of an intriguing thing, here’s a shot of the detail of the outfit: metallic clutch carefully matched to gold…

Wintry Mary Katrantzou print on the street

Mary Katrantzou’s autumn 2013 prints stuck in the mind: icy forests and deciduous branches creeping across a silvery sky, snow-capped peaks and splashes of autumnal hues, each print was like a painted scene that drew you in. On the street, removed from the rest of the collection, a solitary print dress stands up just as well. Elegantly paired with just a fold over clutch and…

A shimmer of pink

Something about this outfit seems to borrow from the best parts of the ’80s: the pink and white sweater, the skirt fabric that turns to magic in the sunlight, incandescent with a kind of metallic pink sheen. And yet the outfit itself is entirely modern. The inkling of sportiness against elements of femininity, the luxuriousness of it all. It’s simple, sweet, and above all, surprising.

A ray of sunshine on a cold day

Yellow on yellow as an outfit sounds scarily like it could result in overkill – especially during winter. And yet, you couldn’t get better proof to the contrary than this street style look. Yellow-on-white floral flared pants are matched by a slouchy bright yellow top, with accessories and beauty look kept to a bare minimum to keep the yellow as the one true statement of…

Black, white, and perfectly coordinated

Graphic black and white patterns aren’t just on trend, they have a timeless way of standing out. This wearer attending Elie Saab’s show at the Tuileries during Paris fashion week didn’t just throw on some black and white stripes as a statement and leave it at that. She also perfectly coordinated the rest: black and white shoes, a white jacket sandwiched between two black layers,…

Grown up girly: Perminova in pink

Combined, there could be little more feminine than soft floral appliques and baby pink fabric. But add a short, bell-shaped skirt, and suddenly the presence of legs shifts the whole look across the sexy-sweet boundaries. Elena Perminova wore this Giambattista Valli dress well, paired with Celine ankle strap heels.

The cool couple: Jefferson Hack & Tati Cotliar

The Louis Vuitton fall 2013 show had just as much buzz off the runway as on, particularly with all the models and celebrities (Kate Moss included) ducking out the backstage exit. Rumoured couple Jefferson Hack and Tati Cotilar (who was still in the slicked under-wig hair and runway makeup) made a stylish yet understated exit: Hack proving that stripes for men this year can cover…

Zuzanna Bijoch breaks the black

Off duty model Zuzanna Bijoch could have stuck to all black, and would have stood out far less if she did. One simple accessory – a patterned scarf – adds enough brightness to change an entire outfit. The crown braids add another sweet facet to the outfit, breaking the bleakness of the black.
