ANIMAL TESTING IN BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Posted: 23.11.2007 at 03.26
Hi everyone,

I am curious where smart, trendy, fashionable people such as yourselves stand on the animal testing debate.

1. Finished product testing - yes/no

2. Ingredients within product - yes/no

3. Animal derived ingredients - yes/no

If you knew either way would this alter your purchasing decision?

P.S missing the Australian weather ....London is SO, SO cold at the moment!!!

x Millie

call me an evil cold heartless b*%#h but it makes no difference to me whether things are tested on lab rats or not. how else are we going to know whether or not the ingredients are gonna react with us? pretty much all products were tested on animals once, even "no animal testing" products, where the finished product was not tested, would have components that were at one time tested on animals, even if it was by another company, to make sure they were safe.

na ruru i agree, look its sad if the animals are mistreated in the process, but would you rather a rat die or you get a huge rash all over your face, or get poisoned etc

Interesting.

Thank you for your comments the reason why I asked is I have a cosmetic company (very high end) here in the UK, we are 100% vegan/vegetarian and do not test on animals and have no ingredients which have been tested for toxicty. We use ingredients that have a safety record spanning over 40 years and have alreday been proven safe. Only new ingredients are required by law to be tested.

We about to launch the range in Australia early next year so was curious about people's opinions.

I am glad i asked the questions, seems a lot of education is needed for instance it isn't rats that get experimented on it's mostly rabbits, cats and dogs!

Also testing for toxicity on lab animals is not as conclusive as the alternatives, companies who test on animals do it for profit not our safety.

Anyway, thank you for your comments, I am surpised young consumers such as yoursleves are so misinformed.

I am glad we launched in London, attitudes are for more advanced when it comes to ethics here.

Cosmetic testing was banned in the UK in 1998. However most leading brands cannot currently claim cruelty-free status as the products and/or ingredients are manufactured and tested overseas.

Statistics
According to an opinion poll carried out by BUAV and Co-op Retail in 2001, 83% of women in the UK would be in favour of a Europe-wide ban on the sale of cosmetics and make-up that are tested on animal.

An opinion poll commissioned Opinion Research Business in 1999 by BUAV and RSPCA found that 88% of women want a complete ban on animal testing for cosmetics, and 96% think there should be compulsory labeling.

According to a BUAV poll conducted by Opinion Research Business in 2004, 79% of people they asked said they would be likely to swap to a brand that was not animal tested if they discovered that their existing brand was tested on animals.

The results of a survey by NOP for the Co-op in 1996 revealed that 81% of those questioned thought that animal testing for toiletries and cosmetics should be banned.
Statistics.

That's interesting Millie, I wasn't aware of a lot of those facts. Just interested to know, how are you planning to campaign in Australia for both your branding and to make sure people are aware of all the facts?

i think that the vast magority of australians will not care but rather buy the product which looks best or has the most competitive price, we as a nation are a rather ignorant bunch as seen my the recent election
i find it a bit rude that you are implying mine and ruru's ethics are underdeveloped, we were just stating that it is better to test on animals then to risk human danger
the ingredients that you use that have been proven safe, how were they tested if you dont mind me asking?

i am very pro animal rights, although when it has come to cosmetics i have had to try and not think about it as i struggled to find products that work on my skin. I would very interested to try your products as i believe that in todays day and age the ignorance people have towards what goes on behind the scenes is pathetic. it is one thing not to care but another to pretend that it doesn't go on!

my ethics are not under-developed, but if you are sick, and you go to the doctor and they give you medicine, its been tested on animals. if you take a vaccine, its been tested on animals. the reason is because they need to see the reactions of these chemicals, that are not naturally used on humans, on living beings, without endangering humans. I find it hard to believe that no componant of any of your products were ever tested on animals, by your company or others. its not that i dont care, its that it is the most effective method of testing, and i dont see any difference between testing on lab rats, and testing on rabbits (a pest in many countries!) or cute little puppies and kittens (put down in the thousands due to people abandoning them). 1996 is a little old to be quoting statistics from and i wonder how one would test for profits? like kaz, i do not appreciate the condescending and patronising tone.

I agree with you on many aspects Ruru, it is a difficult area because no matter what angle you look at it from, when it comes to medication and the growth and development of the world we need to test on animals to create the antidotes that have saved millions and will save millions more in the future. There can be no argument made about medical science and testing, if there was an alternative then that would be brilliant, but for now there isnt and that is unfortunate but the way it is.

I would like to see more and more things being available within cosmetics etc etc that weren't tested on animals as it would take the stastics of animals living in labs TODAY down dramatically, but we can only control what we do ourselves no-one else!

Cosmetics tested on Animal is forbidden and it's about 2 years ago now, all the cosmetics aren't testing on animals any more , but some of their components (itself) are perhaps tested but there's no prove about it...
