If designers like Stella McCartney continue to extend out, making their brand widely accessible and hence less exclusive, will they survive?
There are many sides to this issue. Do we want to see the standard of fashion rise as a whole, or is it about ego or elitism?
We create a personal sense of style and engage with fashion in part as a rebellion against the status quo and a celebration of the things we love in life (art, materials, history, craftsmanship, romance).
Do we want to see more beauty and heart/soul all around us, for the good of humanity, or is it about ourselves, standing out, being more special?
It's not about accessibility or cost per se. Trend and brand band wagoning, at both the high and low ends of fashion, and in my opinion, is the real problem here; the antithesis to personal style and identity, existing as an echo of substance, creating meaning through consumption.
It doesn't matter if you're jumping on latest release Stella McCartney, or Stella McCartney for Target, designer or discount, both can be equally insipid.
