Some interesting comments here. McQueen is a pretty controversial character, at times so panning out American culture and the odd celebrity designer (though he doesn't specify anyone to his credit) comes as no surprise.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN was in San Francisco this week to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the Academy of Art University. As well as catching up with his fellow Central Saint Martins grad Simon Ungless, who is the director of graduate fashion at the university, McQueen made it clear that he doesn't approve of the trend of grooming fashion designers out of celebrity. "Something isn't quite right there, because fashion just becomes a commodity," he said. "It doesn't come down to the concept of good design. It comes down to the concept of bad taste and how good looking the designer is. That is a very Americanised ideal."

Generally speaking, I think he's smack bang on the money about the influx of designers who don't really view fashion as a concept as opposed to a product. From his more couture aligned perspective though, it's understandable as to his disillusion with the Americanisation of fashion but considering the recent exponential spikes in the prices that people are willing to pay, it's no wonder that good looking characters left right and centre have been trying their hand at designing and selling.

And celebrities especially with their "talent" for multi-industry-tasking are a prime candidate for this considering they have mucho le ego, lots of finance (and time :P) and a cult following already.

Anyway, people buy what they want. Not everyone appreciates fashion and a fool and his money are soon parted? *puts nose back down*

I have no problem with celebrities designing clothing or having their own labels like Gwen Stefani, and Mary Kate and Ashley. The thing I love about them is they are actually involved with their products, they know whats being put out there on the shelves. There are a lot of celebrities who have labels who don't get involved with the making of their products. They have everyone else do it for them, and all they care about is having their name on the label. They could care less what the product looks like just as long as it makes them money. To me that's like putting your name on something that's not yours that you did not create. This is when I have a problem with celebs having their own clothing lines.
