Anna Wintour awarded OBE
By Christopher Hastings

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue has been awarded an OBE for her services to both British journalism and British fashion in the United States.

Wintour, 58, who has been in charge of the magazine since 1988 is said to be the inspiration for the boss from hell character in the best selling book The Devil Wears Prada. Meryl Streep starred in the hugely successful film version.

Wintour began her career in fashion journalism after dropping out of school at 16. Her career took her across the Atlantic and she enjoyed success with both New York and Home and Garden magazines.

Wintour who rises before 6.00am every day is reportedy paid $2 million dollars a year. She is a regular fixture on the front row of the world's cat walks and her trade mark sun glasses and bob have become something of a cause celebre.

Tim Burton, the film director once joked that he based Johnny Depp's look in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Wintour's wardrobe. In the past animal rights campaigners have attacked her for continuing to promote fur.

This year the Queen's Honours list included television host Des O'Connor, who received a CBER and comedian and television host Paul O'Grady, awarded an MBE.

Monica Mason, director of the Royal Ballet, was made a dame and award-winning actress Janet McTeer, who appeared in the BBC's Sense and Sensibility, received an OBE.

That's an Order of the the British Empire, well done Anna Wintour!
