As a mixed stud of African/European American decent, I have a choice of different hair styles than, well, what I guess others may not be confident to consider. After all, I'm only mixed through extended blood line about 2 generations ahead of me, but it shows. Anywayz, I notice, and love, that many of the popular and leading celebrities and public officials of color (mixed or not) go with what I like to call 'boldly natural'. Now, I dont mean necessarily 'Macy Gray', even tho' her style was unique strong and hot for her body type, personality, and voice....I mean, well, taking a clean and professional approach to the "non-catalog" hairdo.
3 years ago I decided to grow out my hair because of a whole "new me" phase as I matured and etc. etc. Which was weird for me, since I hadn't had long hair since I was like 6 years of age. So, I experimented around by texturizing my hair, use this or that gel and conditioner, etc. No matter what I did people continued loving petting my head. Even when I was completely lazy for a month not having my hair tampered with at all...people loved it. In fact, at different moments, when my hair was the most outrageous and "natur-fied" I was compared to Lenny Kravitz, or that sexy black guy on CSI (mmmmmmm hot). So, I was like, well if people love my natural texture, and the look of it attracts people, why ruin it with some outlandishly alien style? So, my normal stylist, Brian, would simply help me keep up my hair by shaping it up a bit and texturizing it once a month...get rid of any tangling that happens. And, for the most part, all I would do is shampoo and condition...and then shag up a bit with my hands...ta-da. People find it sexy.
Then, about 2 weeks ago....my stylist completely surprised me. My last appt. with him, I was quiet and didn't give him any direction. I let him do what he ever he wanted randomly (as long as it didnt involve too much cutting and no coloring)....and the end result, he did something that made my friends new and old reallly take notice. For the first time ever, Jay's hair was straight and vivacious!! Oh god, when I looked in the mirror, well...my ego grew like 1000pts lol. And ever since, I've been able to manage the look with very low maintenance....it has that natural long, wild, and messy wet look. Someone asked me if I was part Italian one day cuz I used a new gel. I need to take pics.
Oh, and for the last 3 months my hair has had a hint of a brown/red dye mixture. Originally I went with wine brown or something of the like....then a new stylist of mine on Milwaukee's Eastside hooked me up with a combination of different browns with a tint of red and hint of shine. I haven't color treated my hair recently, yet for some reason, the tint is still enough to get a comment.
So, this year's experiment with "letting it all loose and go" has worked fantastically with me. Maybe I was blessed by God with awesome hair, or miracles exist and low maintenance works for hair (well conditioning and shampooing still reigns supreme). What do u guys think? Especially of the stars who are going all natural?

I say hit the Lenny Kravits / CSI guy look - definately!
My friend is Maurician and she has crazy curls, they look fantastic...but if she straightens them they look good too...and if low maintenance works then go with that, there is nothing more annoying than standing in front of the mirror for 2 hours a day
