A Chinese magazine has been temporarily suspended after it published a photo-spread of models posing in debris left behind by the recent Sichuan earthquake, which killed 50,000 people.



The latest issue of New Travel Weekly, a small lifestyle magazine, was published on Monday, which marked the first three days of national mourning in China. It featured scantily clad models posing against the backdrop of the disaster, some in just their underwear. The magazine has been widely condemned, and its managing editor, editor and deputing editor sacked.

Chinese news agency, Xinhua, said the propaganda department in Chongqing, where the magazine is based, issued a statement criticising the editors for "severely violating social morality, and causing extremely negative social effects".

While the magazine has offered an apology on its website, the publication is said to be subject to "rectification".

As part of the official mourning in China, the government also temporarily shut down television entertainment networks, closed cinemas and other leisure venues this week.
