hey guys and gals,

yep its time for another manufacturing question. I was wondering if i could use "Made in Melbourne" instead of "Made in Australia". Logic says Australia as it is the "country" of origin.

thanks everyone.

I've always wondered about the country of origin. Is it a legal requirement to display it at all?

just had a read from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website

http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/323282

and in it states "Under the Trade Practices Act companies do not have to state where goods are from, but if they do then the claims must be accurate." though it also suggests that it may be required for exporting purposes and legal issues if selling in other countries?

so technically i can say "Made in Melbourne" then?

whats everyone elses opinion on country of origin labelling? how much does it affect your decision to buy? personally, all i need is a good fit and quality, if it happens to be made in a well developed country then thats a bonus.

Well that settles it for Australia at least.

I think the Country of Origin labelling really depends on the country. I don't like seeing Made In China, it has too many connotations. I prefer it when they're European countries. As to whether it says Made In Australia, that doesn't really sway me one way or another.

All that said, Made In Melbourne would really stand out to me.

I know for a fact that it is only a concern legally when importing and exporting. You can't bring items into Australia (for trade purposes) if they do not have a country of origin label and vice versa. Therefore if you were shipping your clothes overseas there would be problems. On the other hand if your label is strictly local/ national then it would definately provide a point of difference for your label and prove to be a unique local touch.

thats a good point wyshop. my plans are to get it stocked overseas in the future so i guess will have to find a medium somewhere.

I know what your saying tania, unfortunately people tend to remember all the bad things about china, fact or fiction, even though alot of the major brands and corprations have invested heavily in infrastructure and quality control. that said i went to shanghai for a couple days and found it to be..hmmm, dodgy in a way. I think china and india are very similar in manufacturing, its just that we know less about what goes on in india and it sounds cool...ha...like made in mongolia.
