Fashion isn't always supposed to be comfortable or practical, especially when it comes from the catwalks of Milan, Paris and London. Big hats, amazing props and tight slinky designs have all been common ways to push the fashion boundaries into new and interesting trends.

However there is a fine line between a fashion parade made for the purpose of selling clothes and one designed to be an artistic spectacle with no real practical value.

Take for instance supermodels Linda Evangelista and Emma Sjoberg in George Michaels video "Too Funky", where they could be described as nothing short of elaborate.

At L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Week we reported on designs by Kirrily Johnson who was using skivvies in a unique way.

And these photos of a fashion catwalk parade are highly unusual. The designer remains a mystery, and once again, though the outfits and wearable, the props allow fashion boundaries to be pushed to the extreme.

Is all this just a way of keeping the shows interesting and attention grabbing? What are your thoughts on fashion as art?

I have to admit, the shows I anticipate the most are the 'spectacles'.

Wearable fashion I can see everyday when I flick through magazines or walk into a store. The things I look forward too are the shows where you know the designer has a reputation for blending peculiar looks and give me inspiration to try something different.

Naturally these looks aren't going to be emulated in an office environment by Susie Secretary but for those of us that like to hit the town in spectactular ways I find the more artistic shows a good source of inspiration for a new hairstyle or even just makeup.

What better way to stand out in a crowd then to find a new way to wear that scarf that EVERYONE has?

Ilove the OTT artistic shows, they make the whole fashion show and actual "show" as opposed to a parade. Designers are artists and this is their work, why not show off their masterpieces in a more artistic setting, it helps tie the whole collections together, and while it may not be practical, it definately makes more people want to watch. And those skivvies would porbably work if you had a mega ugly cold-sore to hide :P.

There are many reasons for this it seemss. One is as mentioned that these are fashions âshowsâ and sometimes the show/entertainment/eye catching element overtakes the normal line of clothes to be marketed. It is always a delicate balance putting on a show, some just parade the clothes, some make the event more memorable for the audience and some set out to get the show really talked about and get press coverage. The latter is a tricky path to go down though as the publicity can seriously backfire!

Another reason is also as someone picked up, the sheer artistic explosion that some wish to display in wild (but carefully planned lol), gestures. Some of this is just visual art for the wonderful sake of it, some is pushing the boundaries of fashion, some is about branding, making a personal statement.

As model, it can be fun and so exhilarating to be part of something really different and âshowâ like, I love the buzz it gives! There can be some not so good ones though, like being dressed in such a way as to be totally unrecognisable (not good career wise!) and the other is being expected to bare a breast or more just for the sake of it. That is a usually a cheap trick but occasionally though can done with real style and in a beautiful sensual way. Also the whole âbag over headâ or very crude bad face makeup, or other crass attempts to draw attention to the line, really is overdone and historically I donât think has worked. Whacky elements that also look beautiful and interesting, even though bizarre, do seem to work though.

A top fashion show has to interplay the show element with the real clothes to be promoted. It will usually contain wearable outfits amongst the outrageous as the whole point of these show is at the end of the day money! Occasionally there will be âteasersâ but if so it will all be part of a carefully orchestrated plan.

Long live creative exciting shows:)
