immediate connotation is really the key.
if I say "cindy crawford" to anyone on the street the name and face would be instantaneously recognised as a model, wheter that person follows fashion or not (at least it would be the case in the 90s when cindy was huge)
today it's really only kate and giselle and possibly heidi at that level
I think after the 90s when 'models could become celebrities' then the celebrities and stars decided to become models, and started closing in on magazine covers and landed contracts with products. (cathrine zeta jones for elizabeth arden, salma hayek for avon and campari, etc)
advertising in fashion became about star power and celebrity than about art and beauty.
although I think it's been returning through the work of mario testino, there's strong sensualities and formalism to his work both in his commercial and personal productions.
testino is leading the lean to the return of models to the centre.
