Fake Designer Gear

What is everyone's take on fake designer gear? Rogue's orientation is such that I think most of us will be firmly against it.

In the wearing stakes (thus not going down the economic path) I think most people simply fail to pull them off, and come off as chav.

Case in point today when I walked past a girl in Caulfield. Her non-descript skinny jeans were being held up by a Louis Vuitton belt, which was clasped together by the (most hideous) diamante Gucci buckle. That's one design house collaboration that obviously passed me by.

I think it depends...
I think some people can carry off designer fakes without anyone being able to tell - in which case who's to know? If no one can tell no one can judge!

Personally though after months of helping people haggle in the fake designer gear markets in Shanghai I'd much rather go to the boutique and actually buy something where people are helpful rather than antagonistic... I came back from China and Malaysia with a whole bunch of real designer stuff... mum didn't understand.

Further if I see another OBVIOUSLY FAKE LV bag (you know the ones that you can tell from across the street that it's fake or where the monogrammed initials are not even LV) ... I'm really going to crack it.

Carefull Xin, lately LV have done some really fake looking real stuff.

I don't like fakes from a designers point of view, I hate when people rip of my designs for web or use stuff that I've created without asking. I also think that if you have the ability to carry of a good fake you should probably start your own brand, cause in the end of the day you'd probably be able to make more money, and have better Karma.

Today my friend called to ask if it was okay to buy a fake Chloe bag while she waits for her house to sell, at which point she'll buy a new status bag. I told her no, no way, never, there isn't an excuse. She got upset with me but she should have known....At the end of May this year I wrote an article titled "To Catch a Fake" (in which I interviewed Robert Chavez of Hermes) strongly against fakes and as Harper's Bazaar puts it "Fakes are never in fashion."
I HATE FAKES. End of Story.
These are the pics from that article (note: all of the bags in the photos are the real thing):

Another problem with fakes (apart from ripping off designers which I agree is totally wrong) is that they do create a social problem.

A lot of the money raised from selling fake bags goes to funding underground organisations including terrorist organisations. The even scarier things is that that kind of activity is now arguably criminal under the new terrorist legislation introduced a couple of years ago.

So now, OFFICIALLY, having fake designer goods is CRIMINAL :p

Having heard that several times myself, I have to wonder how true it really is. Frankly it just sounds like clever spin on behalf of a lobby group to me.

I've read a lot of research on it and many criminal organizations use fake production for extra financing. There might be some sping but for the most part I've found evidence it's true.
