The d700 is expensive because it has a full frame sensor. Full frame sensors are great for low light stuff as it allows you to use a higher ISO with lower noise. Example of this with Canon is the 5D (which is what I shoot with) compared to the 20, 30 and 40D. I haven't played around with the 40D at higher ISO with noise reduction turned off so I can't say much about the image quality, but for me with the 5D, it allows me to shoot at ISO1600 constantly without worrying about degrading the image quality.

The D90 is a nice camera an so is the D300. If you're not shooting low light stuff, the D300 is great however the D90 is also tempting as Nikon tend to shoehorn tech that's available in their flagship models into their base models. At the end of the day, play around with both D300 and the D90 as specs alone aren't enough. You need to be happy with how the camera feels and how easy it is to adjust the settings efficiently.
