This article might be correct. But I don't think if global economy should change in terms of fashion.

Do you think consumers will end up saving their money and opting for higher prices higher quality items (with the hopes they will last longer therefor the consumer will spend less in the long run), or do you think consumers will start buying "timeless" pieces and basics that can be modified to suit the latest trends/that are adaptable (casual with jeans, formal with trousers)
Personally I think it will be a combination, a kind of return of the little black dress (of sorts).

I think we'll see a combination as well. I think the average, fashion forward consumer from the middle market will save money to buy higher quality pieces, but at the same time (knowing how long it took to save) will aim for more classic purchases that can be used over a greater period of time. If it's taken you months to save, you're surely not going to purchase a seasonal piece that's almost had it's day by the time you get it?

Here's a worrying sign for the retail industry (in some fairly obvious bullet points, because I'm almost too tired to string sentences together right now);

* It's not yet Spring in Australia
* Spring fashion lines are already out in store
* A fair chunk of the luxury stores in Melbourne have already started their reductions on Spring lines
* MYER is likely to do a major mid-season (middle of which season exactly?) sale next week, just to get some cash in their registers
* The rest of the industry will then follow suit

Fantastic if you're a consumer, but I wouldn't be all to happy if I were a retailer or an investor.

Price increases already?

Chanel continues to live by a kind of oblivious "no time like the present!" mantra, what with its recent Zaha Hadid installation and now the news of a 20% price increase on its classic handbags, set to take effect November 1. According to fashion blog nitro:licious, a Classic Caviar Jumbo Flap Bag (above) that currently retails for $2,850 will jump to $3,420 in a mere couple weeks.

I've also spoken to one buyer for a top-end fashion label in Australia, and the current ranges their buying (2010) are likely to have an additional mark-up of 15-20% simply because of the devaluing of the Australian dollar.

Australian label Morrissey, designed by Peter Morrissey, has announced closure as well.

Iconic Australian fashion brand Morrissey has fallen victim to the global economic downturn with the announcement today of the closure of its stores.

Webster Holdings, which purchased Morrissey in 2006, will close its four stand-alone stores located in Sydney and Melbourne. It is not known whether the brand will continue to be stocked in David Jones.

Webster Holdings blamed the economic downturn for the decision.

"The decision to close the stores has not been taken lightly, a number of alternative solutions were considered, however unfortunately in the current economic climate it is no longer viable for the Morrissey stores to continue to operate," brand business manager Paula McKenzie said in a statement.

Australian fashion designer Peter Morrissey started the brand in 1997 after a 14-year collaboration with Leona Edmiston. That same year he went into partnership with Rene Rivkin and continued to build the company. It was sold to Oroton in 2000 and six years later to Webster Holdings.

His most recent involvement with the company was as a brand ambassador.

"I have not owned the Morrissey brand or been involved in the business decisions and operations of Morrissey for the last six years so will not comment on how the business has been operated," he said.

"Malcolm Webster is a businessman and it is his decision as owner of Morrissey what he has done to it."

He said his main focus now was on helping staff.

"I will be focusing on them and assisting them with their futures and job hunting as that is the least I can do to show them how much I am honoured to have worked with them," Morrissey said.

Webster Holdings said it will attempt to minimise redundancies by re-allocating staff to other brands in the Webster stable wherever possible. This includes MARCS, Jigsaw and David Lawrence.

Morrissey's Sydney stores are located in Wesfield Bondi Junction, Sydney City Plaza and Paddington. There is also a store in Melbourne Central.

^^^ Wow. So sad to hear you guys (I'm in the US) are suffering such great losses due to this crisis as well.

I'm in Texas, which is faring a bit better than the rest of America right now, but even here a lot of clothing boutiques have closed in the past year alone. And like you, I've noticed perpetual sales.

I think it'll continue to decline, but you know what they say; one door closes, another opens.

On msn.com the other day, there was an article on how Ugg and American Apparel are actually seeing a RISE in sales. People seek comfort more than ever right now, and this is extending to their fashion (or lack thereof, ha!) purchases. Non descript but comfortable basics are perceived as safer purchases to make.

On the flipside, it's been said that during times of economic crisis, sales of lipstick soar more than anything! So I think people will still make those little purchases that go a long way to make 'em feel fab.

As much as I hate this economic downturn, I'm hoping it brings about a return to.............. quality. People will save up for higher end, longer lasting items in timeless designs, and for edgier styles, will invest in vintage and hand crafted goods which will outdo their fresh from the strip mall counterparts.

Actually the title is meaningful that the world economy is effecting the fashion world, specially the last year was very tough for the fashion world. The main reason I read that all the celebrity faced many economic problems last year and that made the fashion world uncomfortable.
