Hate to get philosophical, but what is better? Working hard, moving up, earning more money but being unhappy or not working hard having no money, struggling and being happier? OR can struggling make you happy anyway?

struggling CAN make u happy anyway, if u are doing what you love. This is the problem i am having myself, at the moment. I would b much happier doing what i used to do, as there was so much creativity and it was exciting and fresh, than doing what i am now, even though i am making money now and very soon will have the potential to make a LOT more money but will continue to be slightly bored by it. the bottom line is that i think, personally, working hard can make u happy, weather u earn big biccies from it or not. it is the satisfaction u get that is the most rewarding

Most of us want to live a life full of expensive experiences! Long drinks in cool bars, expensive cars (more than one...), dream houses made of breakthrough materials and designed by artists... Moreover, we select our friends by many criteria apart from their character! For example, how long could you date a guy who is 35 yrs old and works as a cooker in a B class restaurant? (don't get me wrong! my best friend is a cooker and we have endless discussions about this subject!) Even if he is the nicest guy on earth would you choose to live your entire life with him? Will he understand your problems? your career challenges? your money - making instinct? will you be able to have a family? Same thing counts for men also. It is a matter of backround and it becomes harder and harder for all people.
Well that's a question!!! some say that "talent makes capital work"... I believe that for each one of us there is a unique combination of working environment - effort - benefits.
But we have to think in terms of getting the right job according to who we want to be in life and what we want to do exactly! It is clear to me at this time that money ONLY cannot make me happier! nor more productive! What I need is a healthy working environment and more quality in my life on an every day basis - even for simple things such as relaxing and going to a dinner or to see a movie... if you work untill 20 - 21:00 every day you loose everything and most important you lose yourself! All the money in the world cannot pay for that!!!!
It is an inner question that we have to answer.

How did you guys get so wise? :)

Pixie hun, do you mind saying what it is that you do (that is boring) / did (that was creative) ?

Spycab - I agree, money ONLY cant make you happy, you need balance...but not having money can make you unhappy, right?

i work as an optical dispenser and mechanic. So i do the optical fashion/style consulting (choosing spectacle frames and lenses to suit) and the workshop side (actually making the lenses and fitting them into the frames). so yep, thats what i do LOL all day, 6 days a week.

Awesome! that is so cool - what style glasses suit an 'oval' shaped head like mine?

I place a high value on trying to create an environment at work so that people can go home with some spark - whether they are aspirational or clerical. It is amazing how much impact low morale at work can have on a person's life. Afterall, when we are awake, we spend about 40-50% of our time at work. I know I'm a different person if I believe in what I do each day. In terms of money, I settle on a minimum, and then focus on the culture and learning curve/exposure in choosing a role. The remuneration curve can be a bit exponential with this approach, but delayed pay-offs can be worth the wait.

I prefer to be happy working hard in any thing I like, even if I don't like lots of money. If I am the best doing what I do, ppl will see it and in the future I can have lots of money doing what I like.
