not really- i'm spending everthing happily knowing that i'm going back to uni and going to be broke for a long time :D I

I'm also so annoyed at my financial planner for convincing me a year ago to invest all my money. I could have bought a dozen handbags/shoes/coats in the last year and been in the same financial position with the amount i have lost.

Not at all. I've even planned a trip to Melbourne just for shopping after Christmas!

Isn't bargain hunting a reiteration of the times though?[/quote]

Who said I was 'bargain hunting'? :P

It's an opportunity to get out of Perth & head East while we both have time to boot...it is the ONLY window of opportunity for me. That said, I will be taking advantage of any opportunity to shop (we are going to the shopping capital of Australia)! Any 'bargain hunting' wont necessarily be for me personally but to resell to make a [small] profit:)
Personally, I am really only after a high quality fur coat for winter ***dreams***...oh and there's also a vintage car I have had my eye on too ***drools***...but yeah, I don't think I'll fly/drive away thinking the trip was a 'bargain'. Hahaha... While Matt works the 'Boxing Day' sales for his photo agency I will most likely be drinking champagne cocktails by the pool at a good friend of mines!

it seems the recession has had affected some:

Herringbone loses its shirt in crisis

UPMARKET suit and shirt retailer Herringbone has collapsed just days after industry bosses warned that smaller retailers were likely to fail as the economy continues to deteriorate.
Herringbone, founded 11 years ago by former merchant bankers John Mutton and Matt Jensen, was placed into voluntary administration on Sunday, The Australian reports.
Administrator Martin Green, of insolvency firm BRI Ferrier, blamed the global financial crisis and cuts in household retail spending for a 23 per cent fall in Herringbone's sales over the past two months compared with the same period last year.
Herringbone sells suits, business shirts, ties and knitwear at 13 shops throughout NSW, the ACT, Queensland and Victoria.
Starting life as a catalogue and internet business, Herringbone opened its first store at Sydney's Circular Quay in 1999 and quickly became a favourite among executives in the financial sector, where savage job cuts have reduced the need for many former customers to wear a suit at all.
Prior to the global financial crisis, it had also been planning to expand into Asian markets.
David Jones chief executive Mark McInnes said last week that menswear was typically the first area to suffer in a consumer downturn, while children's clothing and cosmetics tended to be more resilient.
Mr Green said he planned to operate the stores as usual while negotiating with potential buyers or parties who may be able to inject capital into the business.
"The administrator is in discussions with Herringbone's bankers, and is seeking their support to continue the business," BRI Ferrier said.
"Expressions of interest are being sought from interested parties either to purchase the Herringbone business as a going concern or to recapitalise the existing business."
The first meeting of Herringbone creditors is scheduled for December 17.

Heard about this a few weeks ago. There are a few other retailers on Collins Street currently heading the same way.

Bring on the big sales, get the cash injections guys!

Well, I was unofficially laid off...ie: I was taken off schedule BUT told they'll be calling me to come in and they never have. So I got screwed I guess. I have actually not gone shopping for a few weeks because my best friend is getting married and I'm in teh bridal party so if I go shopping I will have no money at all to partake in all the wedding events.

Quitting shopping cold turkey like this is very very bad for your health though! Just so ya know!! LOL

Oh hi, I'm new here :)

i find myself buying the exact same amount, if not more.
that said, the pieces i'm buying are of a higher quality (&price!) than things i've bought in previous years. not to do with the recession per se (i'm not stocking up on all the good quality things to last me forever) but more to do with my fashion knowledge &appreciation &realising what is good quality &what is not.

I just got a YSL t-shirt so no.. then again it's me..and it IS hong kong...

actually things are a lot more expensive here than i initially thought

stores such as joyce, harvey nichols, lane crawford and it have jacked up their prices making it about 10 to 15% more than prices seen in melbourne

but luckily on the other hand they do stock impossible to get labels such as mihara yasuhiro juun j number nine thom brown and a lot of comme des garcons lines

I've always thought of HK better for the mid-range and low-end pieces, than the high-end when it comes to cost. You get some good sales there, but the high-end is still decidedly cheaper on the Continent.
