This from the Guardian UK):
(abridged)

No horse required

Believe it or not, jodhpurs are the height of fashion right now. What's more, they're surprisingly flattering, writes Imogen Fox

Let's get the sniggers out of the way right now: jodhpurs are fashionable. No, you didn't misread that - unlikely as it may sound, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges both have waiting lists for jodhpurs that cost hundreds of pounds.

Even Sarah Jessica Parker, a woman with a doctorate in the strapless cocktail dress, is smiling out from the cover of American Elle wearing white jodhpurs.

... every single one of [Harvey Nichols] quota of £645 trousers are going straight to the personal shopping department, bypassing the shop floor entirely. It's the same story at Selfridges, too, where so many customers have pre-ordered the jodhpurs that buyers have been forced to re-order. And all this before anyone has so much as tried a pair on.

This could all be dismissed as a piece of high-fashion madness were it not for the fact that the high street will soon be awash with myriad interpretations of the shape; albeit most have focused more on the distinctive inner-thigh seaming and button details at the ankle, and less on excess fabric at the hips.

This season's version of the garment is not particularly horsey, but all the high-street interpretations distinctly fit the basic jodhpur profile.

At Gap there is so much confidence in the shape that by next month two versions will be on sale.

How a shape sells is the real measure of how well-judged it is. If women have embraced other "difficult" shapes there is no reason to assume that they won't embrace jodhpurs. While it isn't enough to predict a trend's potential purely on the basis of whether it is flattering or not (otherwise how could the popularity of the smock dress be explained), it is a decent indicator. And this is the trump card of jodhpurs: they are surprisingly flattering.

Rebecca Haynes, the personal shopping manager at Harvey Nichols who will be advising her designer-jodhpur hungry clients over the next few weeks, agrees. She believes the shape is more flattering than expected. "They're easier to wear than leggings," she tells me, "and they work well with belted tops that emphasise the waist." She is doubtless right - even the high-voltage fashion girl isn't going to spend hundreds of pounds on something that makes her look dumpy.

Haynes ... does suggest that the jodhpur trend reflects a move towards the resurgence of trousers, especially as evening wear. "Dresses are still big, but trousers are making a comeback for night-time too. Plus they are a great alternative to jeans for daytime."

It is indeed. It's also about the right attitude and the right pair of legs (jodhpurs can of course reveal all). I think lifestyle fits in a lot with this trend, if you're already of the 'horsey set' you going to have a lot more ease pulling this off, and looking bloody hot while doing it.

I like them, but as for skinny jeans, I'm afraid of the horrible sights this trend will create... I don't think they're easy to pull off if one is not slim.

Personnaly, I happen to own a pair. I've worn it for several years. It's not too big at the hips and it's made of a much thicker fabric (heavy cotton), so it doesn't look as clingy as the one in the pictures. It looks a bit like cotton skinny jeans. I love it, but I've stopped wearing itmonths ago because it's too old. The fabric has stretched and discoloured. I guess I'll need to buy new a one. I'll keep my old one for horseriding...

Anyway, if anybody wants some, it's easy to go buy the real deal at any horseriding gear shop (and it's not very expensive).

I note that they're a feature of S-S 2008 as well, with Hermes featuring them on their catwalk in Paris;

see i am not too sure about this, i have been riding since i was 4... and really they aren't that sexy when they are your "work clothes" or uniform which they become mentally... i can honestly say that i will be very suprised if i find myself pulling out my joddys and parading around the social scene in them... i am afraid i would feel very dorkish!
