This is sort of an expansion what I wrote before, but for guys getting into their groove of creating looks I always recommend a few things:

1) Imitate. Don't worry about being original until you have uber-confidence. When you imitate a look you like you'll feel more confident in it by default, and when you look confident in something you automatically look better. So while you find your style, imitate looks. It's how we learn everything in life.
2) Where to imitate from? Scour the street style threads across Fashionising: Paris, Italy, Sweden, New York and London. Also keep an eye on our fashion pictures diary, there are lots of great shoots and adverts to draw looks from. And check out the women's looks two; these days there are plenty of unisex stylings.
3) Find your style gurus. Who do you think dresses really well? Pick a socialite, a celebrity, a sports star, whomever. Then follow their looks online. Imitate and adapt.
4) Save all your key looks to your computer for when you're in need of inspiration. I've since moved my entire look book to my iPhone.
5) My killer tip for everyone: segment your wardrobe. Pick themes (I have a corporate section, a rock section, and a preppy section) and group all your clothes by those themes. That way as you dress yourself you're not looking at a mass of clothes, but can mix and match from a particular area of your wardrobe. You're essentially cutting out the confusion by doing this.
6) Constantly clean up your wardrobe. I always put my clothes into storage when they're off season, and I always keep a list of the key pieces I'm missing (or the accessories I could do with, inspiration courtesy the above picture and street style tips). When I buy, I do so to put them back with a particular theme and store it accordingly.

I have a few pictures of her as well; she has a brilliant bit of androgyny going on.

I have recently cleaned out my wardrobe and i realised it is strictly black/grey/cream/white. There are no prints! So basically all i have are basics, nothing else. Can someone please pass on some tips on how to get out of this rut?

Have you thought about hiring a personal stylist to help you?

I am also guilty of spending too much on unecessary items. I get confused on what to buy everytime I see an interesting item.

My tips would be:
Know what's really important for you.
Determine the item if you need it or you just want it. Of course, you should buy the item that you really need.

I hope I was able to help you! :)

dont fall for high street trends... go for more classic cuts/looks that you can easily jazz up by changing your jewlery etc.

i am reading a book atm called "A Guide to Elegance" - it's great, i honestly think every girl should read it! It tells you what you need as a minimum in your wardrobe, what colours go with what... what works and what doesnt... it really is wonderful. I am totally in love with whoever wrote it, i can tell she is beautiful and has a wonderful wardrobe!

Aim to be stylish not fashionable.

Find your own signature style - something you wear and look great in no matter what is in and out of fashion.

Mine is Jeans, Ralph Lauren shirts and heeled boots or heels... it's such a fullproof look... and you can wear it 10 years from now and still look totally beautiful!

If you can't imagion yourself wearing the item in 20 years time - don't buy it! This way you will find you spend your money on quality, timeless items... timeless is not boring either... i think its totally refreshing!

The blazer with jeans and white t/singlet... is a classic look - with the blazer, that has been brought and adapted into modern fashion by making it a more edgy casual look rather then the blazer being something that can only be worn at the office.

excuse my spelling.
