I'm doing a foundation course at the moment, specialising in photography. My final project, which will hopefully get me into Uni is a Film Noir inspired, film still fashion editorial. Essentially its 11 photos made to look like stills from a film ive made up.

Im going to get two of them printed huge (the second and the last one) and framed for my exhibition, and a book printed to show how it would look in a magazine... with clothes credits and possibly a narrative to the storyline...

In the meantime, here are the 11 photos, what i need is feedback, critique etc, do you like it? do you hate it? why so? what can i do to improve them, would you recommend i frame 2 different images... etc anything that you think proves to be a problem, or just nice happy comments

1: The First Victim

2: No Leads

3: The Hint

4: Miss. Eliza Sterling

5: The Framed Detective

6: The Suspect

7: Warning Eliza

8: The Dead Wife

9: On The Run

10: The Struggle

11: Case Closed

Any feedback is useful to me, slate it if you like. I need an opinion from people knowledgable/really passionate about fashion, to give an educated opinion on the photos from a fashion editorial perspective.

Thanks in advance :)

Daniel

First off, love the concept. Second, completely agree as to the photos you're blowing up; they are the stand out two. Where is the interior on the second? It's phenomenal.

A few things stand out to my eye:
* From a fashion perspective it really stands out ot me that the shirt collar is a few sizes too big for you model.
* Nice use of clothes all up, and most are brilliant for the genre. The tie in 8 is a little off to me though: too fat for a noir tie, and needs to be tied with a dimple to give it authenticity. It's sporting what I'd call a footballers' knot. Same deal with photo 5. I also think the lighting in 8 is the least noir for me.
* 4: love this shot. Add in some smoke to the cigarette in photoshop and you're onto a winner (or shoot with herbal cigarettes).
* Photo 7 isn't showing up for me.

All up; really enjoyed it :)

Ah CRAP! The smoke in shot 4, i completely forgot about that. Thanks for picking that up.
And yeaa, unfortunately, i had fuck all money when shooting this so I had to use what the model and I had, and a few things were risky sizing. I've tried remoulding the collars in photoshop, with very little luck.
And the kitchen in shot 2 is a friends kitchen (the mixed raced guy in the shoot) a few people have said it appears to be too modern for the period in which this is set (i.e. the 40/50s), do you agree with that?

Thanks alot :D

I was going to say the kitchen appears too modern, but wasn't sure if you were aiming for noir style but in a modern setting. The car also looks out of place if you were aiming for a specific era (too plastic and modern, doesn't fit with the other settings). Other than that, beautiful shots.

This is awesome!!!
The only thing I noticed is in photo 8 (dead wife) the expression of the model is not right...its like he's happy or simply no emotion really :))) thats all I could think of. Otherwise the idea is fantastic!

Did you try anything physically? On most sets they'll use tissues and bulldog clips to cinch it in.

The model in the foreground is playing the killer if thats who you meant, the husband of the dead girl is in the background.
On that point though... Are the characters/storyline clear enough though the images/titles?

Yeaa we tried safety pinning the collars and using hair pins, but they looked really awkward and odd, so I decided against it. I figure they wore wuite loose fitting shirts in those days aswell, but its definately something i can mention in my evaluation, in the "if i could do it again" bit. Thanks :)

I like them, the only comment I have is that the detectives face in 7 & 9 seem a little soft, did you do much retouching to it?

No, not really i dont like to do tooo much to the face other than use the healing brush tool in photoshop on small details.
Do you think the skin needs to look more.... harsh (for want of a better word)?
