I need some advice...

Posted: 08.01.2009 at 19.29
Hi,
I recently joined this site and have been avidly following it. For the past year I've been in the process changing my wardrobe from boring t-shirts and jeans to a much more upscale fashion style but I'm having problems with all of the latest trends. I love them but my body just looks terrible in them. I'm very top heavy with a smaller frame, and it's hard to find styles that compliment with today's trends. All of these loose, flowy and straight drop down shirts/dresses just make me look pregnant and most umpire waist shirts I can find have the line going right across my chest. What I would like to ask your advice on is if there are any specific designers who I should look to or specific styles I should try to follow? I'm having trouble following the trends since what I can seem to find just makes me look kind of boring/regular. Thanks for any help and I look forward to chatting with all of you!

Sounds like more fitted styles would suit your shape better. Have you tried the sorts of styles Victoria Beckham would wear?

http://www.fashionising.com/forums/t--Watching-Victoria-Beckham-2291-15.html

Dresses that are fitted around the torso, Rouland Mouret 'Galaxy Dress' style.

You can also adapt current trends, like wearing grecian/one shoulder dresses and tops but rather than loose styles go for fitted waists, or cinch them in with a belt. Also 50s prom silhouettes but in a more modern, sexy shape might suit you well - a la Daisy Lowe:

If you can find some silhouettes that suit you, remember you can change the entire look and feel of an outfit (and thereby making it more current to 'now' trends) by your accessories: SHOES! tights, jewellery, belts, etc.

I know what your talking about - not easy :)

Previously I have enjoyed working as a Stylist/Wardrobe Co Ordinator for David Jones and would be more than willing to help.

We have a range that would suit and am happy to consult with you free of charge. You can see my range landelldesigns.com or find me on face book where I have a fan page.

I am north of Melbourne and can be contacted here or on 0419365505

Thanks, I'll keep an eye and watch her style and yes recently belts have become my new best friend. I think I might end up having to get a lot of my clothes tailored which shouldn't be too much of a problem since my mother is an amazing seamstress/artist. I also have a question about the neckline, what's best for a busty girl like me scoop or V-neck, etc.?

V-necks are more flattering than scoop necks. Have you checked out the stylish designs of Ella Moss and Diane von Furstenburg? I find that many of their designs are flattering on most women of all sizes. Hope that helps.

As having been transformed 3 years ago. Keep in mind that looking nice and fashionable is not about upscale or expensive things. The first step clothes that actually fit and make your body look nice. start building a really good foundation of Basics clothes in basic neutral colors, greys blacks whites etc.
choose things that you can wear daily and pair easily.

try not to invest in trendy clothing styles as that i find just wastes money, build your own style on what you like and personalize it

Always a dilemma when between seasons and styles, with that wardrobes. I have a few fashion tips and ideas running a long side my fashion diary about creating my own brand. For some ideas please have a look at: http://hotcakefashion.com/?q=Strapless-corsets http://www.hotcakefashion.com more then welcome, also while there have a look at my new collection, really cute velvet jackets with satin lining in a 20's style.
Take care! Alice
