I'm going to play devils advocate for the hatchback. Compared to the rest of the world, cars in Australia aren't cheap, and I'm not going to assume you want to spend more than $35k on a fast depreciating asset at this point in your life. If you're seriously cashed up, or your lifestyle could accommodate a sportier car, let me know, we'll talk that end of the market ;)
Premium small cars
Europeans depend heavily on small cars, so they're typically very well appointed, very good on fuel and hold high levels of safety. Prices range from $25-45k, depending on configuration (sedan, 2 & 4 door configurations - auto, convertible and diesel definitely put the price up, but are worth considering). They've also got a bit of attitude that will help them stand out. Reliability can be a gamble; you want good dealer support and a good warranty!

Fresh faces
New cars coming in the next few months, so they'll be the current for the next 4-7 years and do well on their value.
Renault Clio
Mazda 2
Subaru Impreza (New sedan and hatch, has the benefit of being the only AWD in this bunch)
Toyota Corolla (Just announced this week. Excellent feature set, hatch designed in France, sedan designed in Japan - unfortunately made in South Africa)
Frugal
If you're after economy, small diesels like the VW Polo TDi will cost you about $10,000 less than your average hybrid (Honda Civic, Toyota Prius) and get similar fuel economy. It'll hold its value well and be really light on your pocket, week to week.
VW Polo TDi (The baby Golf. The cheapest car here, and the best fuel economy by a mile)
