I was born in italy, raised in asia (all over, really), moved back to italy and now i'm in spain. You have no idea what i have been witness to over the last 2 decades. I am sorry to say that i found asia to be extremely decadent in fashion, and i'm half-asian!! i'm not discriminating or anything. i own up to having been victim to the same thinking- 'if everyone else is wearing it, then it must be the thing to wear', problem being the person whose look we copy is actually copying it from someone else too and what we end up with are streets crawling with people dressed the same, no individuality or distinction. Precisely why i started paying attention to street fashion :) I learned i could tell much more from what average, everyday people are wearing.
As a side note to this rant, spain's not that great in fashion either. Far from it. Sigh. But then again, there are those rare gems you spot once in a while that make you smile to yourself, think 'he/she looks great!'. They redeem their contemporaries, really :) Haha.

I find this all terribly interesting. I would have to say that i disagree on one major point; Americans in the street are far less stylish than Australians. Runners and jeans are commonplace there while it seems that the majority of Australians (or Melburnians at least) understand what a heinous crime this combination is. The problem with Australia is that it is quite warm for most of the year; hence people dress up where they can. Sydneysiders rug up in a coat and boots when it's 23 degrees purely because in winter it doesn't always get a whole lot colder than that! Overdressing is something that I would argue is directly related to the difficulties of dressing fashionably in a climate such as ours.

Also, I disagree on your comment that the French are the best dressed in the world. I would have to say I am consistently disappointed by their lack of style and their misrepresentation as the world's most stylish people.

Some great points in here. I think mukki makes a great point about culture - Australia is extremely laid back and for the most part this is reflected in people's appearance.

That said however I'm not sure about the overdressed concept - unless it's written on an invite is there really such a thing?
