Is denim on the way out?

Fashion is dead. That's the claim, at least, of Hadley Freeman, fashion writer at the Guardian.
"A combination of customer fatigue, overexposure (not least by the Wags in Baden Baden last summer, with their seemingly requisite wardrobe of bootcut or skinny jeans) and, frankly, a lack of any new denim styles left, means jeans, while still a wardrobe basic, won't generate anywhere near the excitement that they have for the past half decade," says Freeman.

"At the end of 2006 you could already see customers and retailers experimenting with alternatives, from leggings to shorts over cashmere tights."
After investing enough money in our denim collection to fund a small war, we're not sure we want to agree with Freeman.

I have to say that in a way I agree with Freeman. I do think the denim market has reached a plateau as far as new purchases and now i think there will be a definite go for real vintage styles and washes...not prefab vintage. I also think that just because people are buying less doesn't mean it's going out of style.

On a related note. I think people are realizing that denim is not acceptable cocktail and party attire and so aren't using it for that anymore and are heading back to traditional dress codes and a trend of formality.

I agree S.Mc.C.
I recently saw a photo of some friends & one of the girls happened to be wearing denim jeans out of the 5 girls in the pic & she looked right out of place...
In saying that, I still luv luv my denim jeans collection!

i went to a 21st this weekend which was a cocktail party on the river and the one girl wearing jeans there looked- well out of place. So i'm agreeing with S.Mc.C - girls are finally getting it!

When I had my Noelle Masquerade a friend asked about wearing jeans and I told her if she showed up in jeans she wouldn't get in. I was joking a bit but if the invitation says Coctail Attire there better not be denim.

soho babi i dont know but it seems people thing they can put something sparkly on top and suddenly jeans are acceptable. i think there was a stage when less-was-more and underdressed was "cool". personally i think its a little rude to turn up under-dressed- especially if the dress code is written on the invitation! the host goes through all the trouble of setting up a classy event and thats kinda mocking it.. i dont care if you paid $500- they are still jeans- you'd be better off in a $50 cheap dress!

denim will never go out of style. theres so many variations on it, and its so easy to wear. EVERYONE wears denim. it is a wardrobe staple.
I will say though, that I tend to go on the dressy side for the most part, but a good pair of jeans goes with everything.
