Karl Lagerfeld hates fat people

"No one wants to see curvy women," Lagerfeld was quoted as saying on the website of news magazine Focus.

"You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," he added.

The world of fashion is about "dreams and illusions", he said, dismissing as "absurd" the debate prompted by Brigitte magazine which said it would no longer feature professional models on its pages.

What a silly man...Real men love curves. It is sexy and healthy. His eyes should prepare for lots of dangerous curves. Curves are the way of the future.

It's a good experiment for Brigitte magazine to undertake maybe they saw the overwhelmingly positive response to this photo from Glamour magazine which garnered them a lot of publicity.

Brigitte's editor, Andreas Lebert, said that after years of having to "fatten up" pictures of underweight models with Photoshop, the magazine would produce its first edition with non-professional models on 2 January. "We will show women who have their own identity, the 18-year-old A-level student, the company chairwoman, the musician, the footballer," he said.

Really? Fatten up? Because usually it's the other way round. Maybe I need to pick up a copy of this magazine to have a look at. It looks like they're trying to ride a fad, will love to see exactly how long it will be before Brigitte will have another professional model grace their pages.

I very much doubt they would use someone with gnarled teeth, acne-pocked skin and greasy hair to sell their magazine. If anything, they'll be using very attractive people who don't fit the "model" mould.

Plus, look at it this way: how much cheaper are they going to be able to produce their magazine if they don't have to pay professional agency models? Methinks there may be less about "real women" and more about "money".

Also, what about advertisements, hmm?

So,what they're really saying... is that only 5-10% of their magazine will have "real women" (what are "real women"? And why aren't professional agency models "real"?) because that's what makes up editorials, etc. where they would actually have creative control over what models they are able to choose.

Brigitte's new philosophy of putting 'real life' women in its magazine caters very well with its readership. Its not really a high fashion magazine but rather along the lines of Women's Weekly. I think Brigitte sells more copies in Germany than German Vogue and Elle put together. They know very well their market and the non risk factor.

As for K .... he's a real *itch for saying that as he himself used to be fat and spent dateless evenings in front of his giant plasma TV eating plates of Apfel Struddel and Black Forest. He seems to put curvy women and obesity in the same box. Poor liebling's getting senile...

I'm perfectly healthy, and while I'm considered shapely, I'm not all tits and arse... which seems to take me out of the "curvy, real woman" category as depicted by the media.

Yet I'm never short of contact from "real men" (which should obviously never, ever be confused with those troublesome "fake men").

Different people have different tastes just as different people have different body types. Tall and thin just happens to be suitable for fashion, just as curvy is better for glamour, athletic for sportswear, etc.

Real men love curves.

And those who don't are fake men then?

It is sexy and healthy.

Beth Ditto has curves. I can't imagine how healthy she isn't. And curves are not the future. Body shapes move in trends.

Considering the way our society is, it would be healthier for the masses if we all found out what our own healthy limits are. If we actually learned to accept them and look at fashion photography etc with a certain amount of humor and detachment, it could help.

Lagerfeld is making a classic mistake by generalising and allowing his own personal, if close minded, opinion to be aired in an environment where it can reach the public. Personally I've thought much of slender women as the curvy women. On the catwalk, I must admit that I'd like to see statuesque over skinny or wobbly. The popular image right now makes me want to check their vitals and run a blood test to make sure their bodies are functioning well.

I'm really gonna be hated for this but I love Karl and i agree with him.

Australia is too nice and too concerned about models that are too skinny
when really obesity is such a widespread problem we probably should be sending out a different message.

The average Australian size is a size 12, does that not worry anyone else?

But back to the world of fashion, i believe clothes do look better on a size 6 or size 8 frame. I don't think i'd like seeing a size 12 on the runway, it definately would make a difference in my opinion of high fashion.

I think it could just be a fad.... too many people in the fashion industry have a slightly altered view of the world and like Mr Lagerfield will have a problem adapting to the thought of plus size models taking over the runway,
But i guess it all comes down to if it sells, then it could be here to stay....

As i said this is just my opinion and i'm not here to offend anyone as i know this could be a touchy topic.
