The question is: how many people actually want to look like Madonna? And we're not talking Madonna in her hey-day, when she somehow managed to make dark eyebrows and bleached hair look fashion forward. We're talking about Madonna today. In recent times we've seen her all too often in tracksuit pants, doing freaky acrobatics in high-cut leotards and taking on the world one orphan at a time with those veiny Rocky-esque bicepts. Although the descriptions of Madonna as a style chameleon and successful cultural phenomenon can hardly be refuted, the question is more of her relevance to fashion today. Do the younger generations, who are the target audience of stores like H&M, want to dress like Madonna?
H&M have had some highly successful collaborations in the past with popular and highly-regarded fashion designers. It would seem that Kate Moss being picked up by TopShop may just have rival retailers clambering for their own celebrity-named lines in response.
I just cant decide where to go with Madonna, on one hand i still kinda like a song of hers here and there...but then again it can be a bit sad that instead of aging gracefully she is trying to cling onto her younger years (and FYI Sharon Stone for Basic Instinct 2, no one wants to see a 55 year old crossing their legs like that!)
So i would conclude that the branding for madonna is somewhat confusing, are you mature and classy or young and trend-setting? Mature and young? Hmmm. I would say no from me.
What freaks me out about Madonna is that despite all the work, all the exercise, and all the absolutely disgusting outfits, she still hasn't had the gap in her teeth fixed!
Shallowness aside, what kind of brand does Madonna actually project these days, and how can H&M conceivably see that fitting in with their brand? She might have been an '80s style icon, but she's certainly out of touch these days.
There is something slighly Madonna-ish about the styles, but all up I think they're much more classic than what she's been wearing. There's also nothing remotely remarkable or innovative... but I guess we shall see the final collection when it comes out.
It's a no from me anyway - I think her time to get into fashion has long passed.
