From the it's not really a rumour file;

A copy of the Magna Carter has been sold for $21.3 million. It was purchased by David Rubenstein of The Carlyle Group. The odd thing is Rubenstein bid by telephone while he was actually in the auction room. Anyway this is something that I would really enjoy having in my collection ;).

Wow that would be amazing to own. I believe this is actually a late 13th Century copy though?

That's right but it's only around 80 years older then the original and this one carries the seal of King Edward.

From Reuters
NEW YORK - A rare 710-year-old copy of the Magna Carta was sold at auction for $21.3 million by The Perot Foundation at Sothebys in New York, the auction house said on Tuesday.

The Magna Carta established the rights of the English people and curbed the power of the king. The U.S. Constitution includes ideas and phrases taken almost directly from the charter, which rebellious barons forced their oppressive King John to sign in 1215.

Sotheby's said the Magna Carta was ratified and reissued with each monarch who succeeded John. It was enacted as law in 1297 by the British parliament when it was reissued by King Edward I. The copy sold on Tuesday is from 1297.

Funny how it's always spelt differently: Carter (in the top article), Charta, Charter, Carta are all incarnations I've seen.
