Makeup Tricks

Hi,

Tania I agree you should do a course but one that is unbiased i.e no affiliation with any particular brand. The reason for this is the cosmetic companies do these courses not to help you...well not when they dream these ideas up but rather to get and or appeal to a different customer base and thus growing their market. That is why MAC gives discounts to make up artists so they recommend and use their products yet another marketing ploy...why and how do I know this I aslo work in Marketing and have launched many top makeup brands I actually came up with a few of these gimmicks many years ago!

So the end result being more $$$$ for them and you end up with yes some useful tips but also a drawer full of said brands cosmetics which you had to redeem from your courses cost.

This is by no way a shameless self promotion but I run a company called www.dilkesandherath.co.uk, I did some courses in Sydney recently. WE have taken a break so no more courses planned but it will give you a helpful insight into what I'm explaining and why.

The best thing I've learnt & apply in most areas of make up & fashion is that there are no rules...
'If u look like everyone else then u are everyone else'...
I agree that u shld be unbiased in ur decision when it comes to wot u want...afterall, to me, it is all about individuality & self confidence..
Feeding ur skin by Carla Oates has some great tips & tricks, which are natural, if natural is ur thing?!
Another book I enjoyed was The Power of Makeup by Trish McEvoy...unfortunately her website is still under construction.
I also had a look at kissandmakeup's website & I think it is just Brilliant!! ...it provides some great techniques to help u create different looks Meowrrr. BTW I love the brush set!!!! That's definately going in my makeup bag. :-))
I also have a personal shopper in the US who buys alot my products for me & ships them for free if purchases are over $140, this beats the ridiculous mark up Australia seems to have on most international products. I always research the product & how it works best for me by sampling the product first before buying.
Also check out strawberrynet.com which offers continual discounts & brilliant diversity in leading products...
These are some of my personal favs...there are stacks more sites just go to google.com.au & search wot topic/s u want to read about...that's if ur a computer person.
Vogue forum is also informative for different points of views about girly topics & has some great tips & tricks.
Im no make up artist or expert, my knowledge stems purely from books & websites & my willingness to explore without confinments.
Princessmillie you sound like u have alot of knowledge in the industry & I wld be very interested to see wot ur courses cld further offer me & my personal style, cld u possibly advise when & if u are coming to Perth. :-))
Sorry about the rant but...I grew up without my Mother in my teenage years & had to develop alot of my skills & techniques thru reading & observing...and of course, making some big disasters...the best makeup tip I always apply when doing my friends makeup is highlighting how beautiful they are. And just empowering them to believe in themselves.
With or without makeup, beauty comes from within!!!!

you're absolutely right - beauty does come from within.. just sometimes she needs a helping hand :P

i guess what i was looking for was a list of some ideas to help make you look your best even when you aren't feeling it, or when you need that little something extra to make yourself look better than you feel (like a job interview after a long night on the town!)

Thank you to everyone who responded!

Also, I'm not after trends, or other peoples makeup techniques. What I am after is those little things like using bronzer/darker shades on your cheeks to make it look like you have higher cheek bones.

Aaaaw i see... :-)) here's some I use:

Get a spoon & run it under cold tap water & place on ur eyes (shut) for an instant lift.

Eat heaps of pears...they seem to be magic for my skin!

Strawberry facials are always great before going out...tightens the skin...ensure to thoroughly wash strawberry or go for organic.

Dip ur eye brush in ur facial mist then ur eyeshadow for a more defined effect.

If u like mascara...apply it first...then ur eyeshadow...then apply another coat of mascara...

Blast ur eyelash curler with ur hair dryer to create a better effect.

Found these two in a recent Elle mag....Get lemon & squeeze thru ur hair & sit in the sun...this will bring out highlights...but is apparentley really bad for ur hair...so....to make my hair silky again...

Mix 2 eggs with 4 tablespoons of olive oil & wash hair with shampoo then apply mix & wrap hair in cling wrap for 20 mins....hair is ultra silky again.

there we go :D I really must comment on the egg-shampoo thing, it really really works! Also, a henna hair mask (made with organic henna, squeeze of lemon, coconut oil, water) left on for about an hour does wonders for brunettes. If you want to dye your hair, leave the henna on as long as you can (preferably overnight)

Does it really? It sounds bloody odd, but I'd be tempted to give it a go!

oh yes. Makes your hair all silky smooth. Make sure you rinse it out well and use enough shampoo to mask the eggy smell though

Hi Guys,
I've been reading your posts with interest. I hope you don't take this the wrong way these are just some helpful hints.

A lot of the natural solutions can unfortunately have adverse effects, always be careful. They can be quick fixes sometimes but think about what happens to your fruit and veges after a while even if you have them refridgerated ...they go off. So natural is not always best. There are so many toxins as well and alergies within fruit and veges. So unfortunately beauty editors write these things down without thinking of the consequences.

Without getting too scientific harsh particles like seeds, sand and salt found in scrubs bought and homemade can damage your sensitive lipid barrier( you can google it if you don't know what that is ) this is BAD....very bad. You will know when you are 45 and wandering what happened!

Your face is one of the most important assets. Look after it, and I don't mean having to buy into the hype of expensive skincare, some times a simple cleansing and moisturisng routine is enough, drink plenty of water...at least 8 glasses, excersise, get fresh air eat lots of fresh fruit and veges and you will notice an improvement. Too often we make mistakes then look for quick solutions and make things worse.

Makeup should enhance who you are not hide. Too many women hide behind a mask. Also don't try to cover you imperfections rather play up your good points etc. Keep it simple.

SoHo Babi actually I am returning to London soon for london fashion week. I am here for a few more weeks so ask any questions be happy to advice you.

oh and give Trish McEvoy a miss, I worked with her many many moons ago and the product is one of the worst products I have ever come across its all hype she is married to a plastic surgeon and she does this cute filofax type makeup kit, its pallets that are slotted into an organiser very cute shame about the product!

Two products I will recommend to the grave well until I launch mine....laura mercier and BECCA. Which incidently is from Perth and taking over the world.
