Hi all, thinking about buying a new suit (or 2). Mainly for work and also to wear on those special occasions.
Does anyone have any suggestions for any good places to buy nice, reasonably priced men's suits in sydney?

I tend to stay away from the big department stores. My last 2 suits were purchased from Uber stone and a obsecure brand in Hong Kong.
and i prefer the contemporary fit style, looks better (in my opinion).
hopefully it wont cost more than $500. Would like to go back to HK to buy it given it only cost me AUD$150 last time, but adding the airfare........
leaning towards studio italia this time. saw one in a catalogue which looked good but there was no price. @_@

anyway, thought i'd get a few ideas first.
thx

Daniel

$500? Have a look at Arthur Gallan in that price bracket. You're not getting fantastic quality (but you need $1,500 a pop for that), but they do sport a modern cut and some extra detailing normally not found on the cheap end.

Be sure to ask if there's any fusing or glue in any of the suits you look at. Also carefully consider the fabrics, a non-blended wool will last far longer than anything else. Avoid anything with elastaine.

If you were in Melbourne, could suggest a few other shops as I just went down that path. Good luck.

Also hold out for the sales - they're not that far off.

Since i live in hong kong i can only recommend hong kong stores

You can try these stores, this is in rank of price and quality imo. These stores generally have suit sizes in asian body types, so really nice and tapered and thin

This may be late coming, but you could set aside some time and try opshops or risk ebay. There can be some rare gems in there and you could get away with paying under $100 for the suit. Then just find a good tailor and dry cleaner and have the thing altered and cleaned. Although I'm guessing you'd be something like a 37-39 collar, 28-30 waist, so it may be even harder to find something that fits close enough to allow alteration, unless you find a really good tailor (Thanks for the tip on the tailor Daniel, I'm thinking of taking in another suit and those tartan trousers now. That woman does wonders)

One advantage is if you find a suit in good condition after you have it altered you have a unique suit. If you go for this option, aim for solid colours, they are much easier to retailor to fit than a suit with a pinstripe or such as the tailor doesn't have to worry about matching the patterns.

I forgot to add.
This is hard for me to say, seeing as it annoys me when sales clerks suggest it to me, but: Try the children's section of designer brands. Some of the larger kids sizes may fit and they can be less expensive than the adult version. Avoid the deparment store brands as they are often made on the cheap and have little material left for altering, however some of the designer suits leave enough excess.

Have you tried networking and trying to find a tailor who will work for cash?

I agree with Daniel that AG makes great quality suits, which flatters a man's body. It's also very modern and slick. I think AG has an Australian and European flare to it.

I also like Calibre's suit but they are too trendy and can date.

I also like Hugo Boss' suits but is classy but suits more bigger men.
