Hi! M.A.C is a really good brand. Def. one of the top brands to use.
I personally use E. Funhouser NY for my shoots, they have a really funky range of colours and a really great professional range, designed by a runway makeup artist. You should be able to check the range out on efunkhouser.com - though it's not available in stores, you need to purchase it through an efunkhouser consultant.
Hi Ree ...I use a few makeup artists for my model shoots, if your interested I can get some details for you on the makeup they use ...send me a message if your interested
Most of the stuff the make-up artists use at the shows I've been to have been MAC, L'Oreal, etc. MAC do make some kick-ass cosmetics though. Also at the end of the day, it's not the most expensive make-up that looks good in photos. It's the way it's applied according to the style of the shoot and the skill of the MUA.
Plastered and over the top make-up will not look good in photos regardless of the price you spent on it.
The biggest difference between professional make up and day make up is the intensity of the colour, what you see in the pallet is exactly what you get when it hits the face. Straight of the shelve MAC is an obvious winner. I find the neopolian (sp?) make up a bit nasty but it might be how the girls that use it are trained. Also I worked with a girl who used all cruelty free products the other day and she had eyeshadows with crushed stone in them in the sexiest of colours had a great shimmer.
I've used a little myself as well as seen it used and recommended by MUAs
if I'm to use anything myself it would be kryolan or MAC depending on the effect I'm after and the availability of the kryolan.
and the one must have product for me... the MAC blot powder! it's great for just sealing in a makeup like any other powder or if you're not using makup just to matte down the skin a little and avoid those reflections from my lighting. love it!
