(margiela is way better than comme des garçons, from my point of view, of course.)
and i think ripped jeans can be cool but you need to pull a very good effortless look, because they can look silly and dated.

True - it's definitely the effortless thing that makes all the difference!

I've seen a lot of guys wearing ripped jean shorts around Melbourne lately, some do it well some not so well...

D'you reckon it's coincidental that ripped is coming back in a (US, any rate) recession? I mean, the last time I remember dirty/ripped/grungy being fashionable was the recession we had to have ...

Is it better to look poor now? Instead of kinda quality, neat, everlasting classics?

I don't think it's a coincidence at all; a lot of street trends will emerge as answers to the economic down turn.

i think the recession and ripped jeans have no similarity at all. Classics will forever remain, while new trends emerge. Thats how fashion works...

Chanel never stopped showing clean, classic silhouettes during her time, and Karl sure isnt going to stop either. Recession or not.

The 80's were full of ripped jean trends and washed denim. as well as the early 90s. Its just the street trends coming out.

Karl's Chanel is one that surprised me: there were a number of ripped / frayed suits in the most recent collection (Spring 08) ... did he plan them long in advance or not, I wonder? How good is his economic forecasting? The collection came out just around the recession hit the media big time....
