STARS as Designers

Posted: 21.11.2007 at 12.14
I read an article in vogue this month from the Lanvin designer and i tend to agree with him. I find it annoying that every Tom, Dick and Harry or should i say Beyonce, Madonna and Gwen to have their own fashion label. I wonder how much work they actualy put into these fashions line rather then throw their name at it. I find Kate Moss credible for having her Top Shop line as she has been in the industry since she ripped out of a uterus and thrown down a runway.Even the Olsen Twins to a degree. I cannot credit people like Stefani, or Venus Williams, SJP(even though i love her), Sienna Miller, Madonna, Vicoria Beckham, Kylie feel sorry for me Minogue, Beyonce and many more, with a line of clothing.
If you want to invest in fashion buy shares in LVMH. Or better still support young designers who need funding to get their names out their through advertising campaigns, but dont stamp your name over someone elses work and call it affordable fashion for the everyday person.

i agree, however i think sienna miller is an exception as she was quite influential at a time, the thing is, at least these 'stars' are doing something with their time, working as oppose to just lazing away, if people buy it well why not?

Personally I'd rather see this big wigs spending more time raising awareness of more important stuff than just stamping their names on clothing and accessories.

The thing is, are they actually helping out in the design process or finding out what the latest trend is, getting the designers to copy what will be released and just adding their name to it to add more to their bank accounts? I'm not saying they're not allowed to do what they're doing but I think they would get far more credibility if they were actually doing the designs themselves and being part of the frontline production team rather than just managing.

We'll see how long this trend lasts though as I don't see it being sustainable or many of them becoming a synonymous name/label in the future. Look at the who is still a big name in the after several decades (not just years) and then we can judge. Similar approach to other things like music, art and literature. The current bestsellers are just that...current - not masters.

I like the idea of such ranges when the people behind them are actually stylish or trend setters themselves. I can't imagine wanting to dress like Beyonce or Amanda Bynes? But Kate Moss and Sienna Miller - yeah, why not. Those two really do set trends, why shouldn't they make a quid off it?

I think this is quite like seeing the colour of the season or the design of the season in shops like supre or valleygirl after having bought it a month earlier from your favourite aussi designer. Or like seeing fake chanel/tiffany&co on ebay and sometimes even kiosks and at markets.

I think the true fashionistas will always appreciate original design and good quality. Be it those designers who are new but use good quality material and have an eye for detail or be it the original classic chanel design.

More personal to me, its just like getting an accountant who is not qualified to give you advice compared to caring for your finances so as to pay more to speak to a qualified accountant..

the whole stars having their names on it doesn't do much for me because i know its not original & i think its an exploitation of the industry. but like i said.. once a true fashionista, always one..

as for kates line at topshop.. i much prefer following her trend and adopting what i like rather than wear something with her name on it.. the former is just more fun.. but if i had known that she is the genius behind the design or quality.. then different story i guess.

geez i didnt know how uptight i was about this issue! but like kaz said.. nothing wrong with exploiting the dummies in the market! geez if supre is buying gowings building in sydney obviously they are doing something right. & in that respect, my hat goes down to them.. but i prefer to stick to fewer items but quality buys.

Agree with you there Helen. And i agree with everyones points. I believe if your contributing then its better than just reaping the benefits. Although alot of celebrities have the power to invest in the future of fashion and i think Angie stepping out in a velvet op shop 12 dollar dress was a standing point.
