I've been trying to find a replacement for one of my favourite jackets that has since been worn to death and is starting to show it's age.
I'm very particular about what I want, and I've found one that may be a suitable replacement if not for two points on contention:
1. It's navy, I want black
2. Although it's the label's smallest size, its still too loose on me.

The sales girl suggested I run it through a hot wash and dryer and the item should shrink to fit. I'm also tempted to dye it the colour I want.

What do you guys think? Should I spend a pretty penny on an experiment that may not work, or just let it go?

You can always buy it and give it a go :) Rather than trying to shrink it in the wash, though, find a good tailor and get it fitted for you. And ask professional advice about the dying! And know how to clean it up or you could accidentally dye.. well... everything!

I certainly wouldn't shrink it, but would buy it and have it altered.

What price range are we talking?

It's not something I can have altered, its a knitted jacket, it was around $350.

I'm letting it go. I did the washing and realised how long it took my jeans to shrink to fit so it would take this way too long.

However it if was the flirting clerk that convinced me to buy those pants selling it to me...

if its a thick knit wool then it should shrink no probs in the dryer thats if you've already bought it.

I wouldnt get it if it didnt fit well in the first place or cannot be altered.
